So in celebration of International Women’s Day, I thought I would take a look at a few interesting facts about the day, how it’s celebrated, and how it all began. According to ghanaweb.com, IWD actually began as a woman’s rights struggle in the U.S., back in the early 1900’s.

International Women’s Day: A little history and thought

Women at that moment in time were fighting for shorter working hours and better pay, as well as fighting for the right to vote. It was back in 1910, that it was decided that a day called “Women’s Day” would be set for every year, and for every country across the world.

The purpose of this day originally, was to press for women’s demands, such as the rights to work, to vote, to be rained, and to end discrimination against women. The day – March 8th – was finally made International Women’s Day, by the United Nations in 1975.

By 1999, International Women’s Day took on a whole new meaning and was celebrated across the world. It wasn’t a day to demand the rights of women anymore, but rather a day to recognize and celebrate all the achievements of women through the years.

So to all you women out there reading, Happy International Women’s Day!!
