Skyrim discontent and why PS3 lag fix works

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was years in the making, so it came as no surprise when positive reviews began to come in from both fans and critics. Like all games there have been a few issues along the way, and the most publicized problem in the World of Skyrim would be the PS3 lag that plagues certain users.

The feelings regarding Skyrim have been mixed from the start, as they wanted this to be a perfect RPG but depending who you ask Bethesda may have stopped a little short on this wish, although we’ve never met the perfect game. A recent article has looked into why the latest game from the Elder Scrolls series fails – you heard right – and while some of what they say makes sense, we’d have to disagree that Skyrim is a failure.

Skyrim discontent and why PS3 lag fix works

Their first issue is with the lack of consequences when you decide to go down the route of an evil character. In most games when you go round killing you might feel a little guilty, but you don’t seem to get this feeling in Skyrim; you just kill someone or something and then move onto your next quest. You do get the choice to turn yourself in and to turn over a new leaf, but the consequences for your terrible past don’t seem harsh enough.

You may remember an earlier article we published, which detailed this very issue in our hands-on. We killed a trader’s sister and then later paid money for our crime, but the brother was happy to see us after this, although we killed his sister. Skyrim is not the real world and we know how hard it must be to get everything correct, but this should not be the case. One reason this would have to be is thanks to that trader being an important part of a quest.

That’s not the only issue some seem to have with Skyrim, it seems as though combat in the game is lame. It’s said that the hack ‘n’ slash way of combat is a little dated now, but would you agree? While the article aims to uncover the failing of Skyrim, they do admit it’s still a great game but is a long way from perfect.

We understand people are different and have many views but this will undoubtedly upset some gamers; although others may support it. In our opinion Skyrim is an amazing success with a few tweaks being needed, which are in the process of being released.

Speaking of those tweaks, we were promised the Skyrim 1.4 patch would finally resolve the PS3 lag issue, and we are pleased to report it has; or will do once it’s released for Sony’s console. Bethesda has finally managed to isolate what has been causing the issue, and we were surprised to learn bookshelves were the culprit. This is because a script in your characters home could cause lag with active scripts, which in turn could then make your PS3 game save larger than what it should be.

The developer has not yet announced this but the PC patch notes for update 1.4 mentions the issue bookshelves have with save files and lag issues for the PS3. We still have no idea when the patch will be ready for download, but it should be soon.

Games are about an experience, I would sooner have a game like Skyrim than say a perfectly polished game with limited content.  These days I seem to judge a game by asking one question. Have they done enough right?  If the answer to this is yes then I am happy with a game.

  • T2k123

Not really a specific question lol? “have they done enough right” in what content? Maybe you should re think your question, not every one enjoys playing a bug riddled game with broken mechanics :/

  • T2k123

Oh and many games have more than limited content, its weather or not you have the brain to realise the potential within the game instead of just completing campaign, sticking your hand in the air and saying your finished

  • Kaden101

No they haven’t done enough. The bloody thing doesn’t work properly. It’s crashes my PS3 within 10 minutes of loading the game, & I shouldn’t have to restore my consoles file system because of this piece of crap. Haven’t played the game since before Christmas, because….well….I can’t. It won’t let me.

  • T2k123

Same happened to me man, its pathetic that bethesda develop a game for so long, only for it to brake once again, how a broken game one goty is beyond me

  • Fallenlords

Have they done enough right as far as you are concerned?  For example with me graphics are not a big issue, I couldn’t care less about ambient god rays and all that guff.   I would for example care more about the control mechanism and if it feels fluid.   Because games are always going to be highly subjective, if you ask the question have they done enough right of yourself I find it’s a good gauge.

Dead Island prime example, to me they did enough right. I still enjoy that game but if you analyse it there are lots of problems with the game.  Something like Rage to me they didn’t do enough right, the whole game didn’t know what it was suppose to be overall.   Individual parts are good and I loved the wingsticks, but as a whole to me they just didn’t do enough right.

  • Fallenlords

Obviously in your case they haven’t, but on the bright side they have acknowledged the issues. Patches are on the way and hopefully your game will be working properly soon.

PS3..platinum’d the game, completed over 300 quests 17mb file….180 hours, barely any lag, the only time i get lag is after 4+ solid hours sometimes more, simply restart and continue…only get chance to play for that extended time on weekends though :(

  • T2k123

I don’t think you understand his point, its not that they ‘plan’ on fixing iy, its the fact that everytime they release a game it is beyond payable in some points

  • T2k123

I understand what your saying, I look at games in the same sort of way, but what anger me is that a company like bethesda can get away with so many bugs even to the point where the data needs to be restored to play, if another company were to do that for instance naughty dog or rockstar then fans would go bonkers. In starting to think thus is becoming more like a COD game, instead of fans kicking up a fuss they just sit back and except thw fact that bethesda made it; why the hell should bethesda get away with a broken game? Other games wouldn’t ….

So, in the meantime, would it help to take everything off your bookshelves and toss them into a chest or something?

my lag is so bad!!!!!!!!! i cant even run anywhere without it freezing up to 12 seconds and occurs every 30 seconnds. i have deleted everything off of my ps3 and just reistalled the game and my saved file and still have the same problems. cant look in my inventory with out it taking 5 minutes of my time to add or remove something.

They haven’t done enough.  If the game couldn’t be finished properly before February, then it shouldn’t have been released before February>

If the writers of this article think the bookshelf scripts caused the lag on the ps3 they should not be writers …. Much deeper than that idiots
