New THQ properties for Xbox 720 and Wii U

It’s fair to say that another generation of games console would offer as many problems as it would ways to make more money, although publishers and developers need to get the transition period right to help them make money rather than lose it.

Within the last 24 hours we’ve heard from THQ’s Brian Farrell and while he understands the issues involved when it comes to “next-gen consoles“, he can also see this time as a great opportunity to establish new properties. Farrell didn’t mention any console names, although this article does explain that the opportunity comes from next-gen “consoles“.

New THQ properties for Xbox 720 and Wii U

The three main machines would be Wii U, Xbox 720 and the PS4 (the last two names are just codenames). So if Farrell refers to “consoles” he’s more than likely referring to one of these, or maybe more than one.

You can see the main points detailing THQ’s earnings in this article, and this post shows that Farrell was asked directly about Wii U development although he explained “specific systems” wouldn’t be mentioned. So at this time we know THQ see opportunity in new console cycles, but they’re not giving up any details just yet. You got to love THQ’s optimism considering they posted a net loss of just under $56m, although we’re looking forward to seeing what they do with the possibilities offered in a new console cycle.

Farrell predicted Kinect and Move would extend the current generation, was this correct? The same Brian Farrell saw Kinect and PS Move as a reason for putting next-gen consoles on the back burner, and back in 2010 Farrell explained that motion controllers would help extend the life of the PS3 and Xbox 360. You can read more on his comments in that older article here, although we’d love to hear your thoughts on his comments now that we know the results for Sony and Microsoft motion controllers.

How do you feel about the impending next-generation consoles, even though we know very little at this time? You can see some recent news on the PS4 here, and also a roundup of Xbox 720 rumors in an earlier article. What would you like to see THQ develop for next-gen machines?
