Another Call of Duty game may not be a revelation but fans of the series will be glad to know that Activision has confirmed a new game will be arriving this year and COD 9 will add to the many titles of this franchise, although some followers may say that they should release two a year.

With no details in regards to the title previous reports propose that Activision may be getting ready for Black Ops 2 although this is still a rumor, and in an article on IGN news of the Call of Duty’s Modern Warfare 3 making over a billion dollars shows that there will be plenty of interest for every new title. An annual appearance of the Call of Duty is not really a bolt from the blue but this is the first time that Activision has specifically stated that there will be a new COD game released this year.

Only a few days ago we wrote a post on investigating the COD 9 Iron Wolf project and in this we spoke about Sledgehammer looking to recruit for work on a new Call of Duty along with speculation of the next generation consoles getting new COD games. In reference to the earlier comment that some feel there could be two a year not counting DLC, others would be quite happy waiting a bit longer for more variation to the game.

The Call of Duty Elite social network service has had 7 million subscribers starting from November and Venture Beat talks about the recent report by Activision Blizzard that has drawn in so many gamers. Around 1.5 million of them have signed up for a monthly fee of $4.99 for the newest content like COD: Modern Warfare 3, which was last years best selling title. Those who want to save a few bucks would be better off subscribing as opposed to getting all of the DLC at total cost price over the upcoming nine months.

More statistics show that over 639 million hours of Modern Warfare 3 were played up until the end of December and online gamers are up 12% more than on Black Ops last year. Eric Hirshberg the CE of Activision Publishing spoke about the COD franchise continually growing and the most played games on the Xbox Live online gaming service are Black Ops, Modern Warfare 2 and MW3. He also confirmed the new Call of Duty game release for 2012 and revealed that Call of Duty China will also launch in the near future.

Do you think the fact that a new COD is announced every year means that it is now expected as tradition? Are you looking forward to another edition in this popular franchise?
