Battlefield 4 adds to PS4/Xbox 720 release confusion

A couple of days ago we had learned from a leak that Battlefield 4 could be the next game from the franchise, which did not go down that well for those who were hoping that Bad Company 3 would be the next choice. There’s even more heartache now as BF4 beta has finally been confirmed by EA, but there seems to be some confusion as to where it all fits in with the release of the PS4 and the Xbox 720.

A recent article has looked at the fall 2013 start date for the beta program and suggests that if this is the case then the release of the next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft may not happen in 2013 after all. They suggest that if the beta of Battlefield begins in the fall of 2013 then the full retail version will not release until 2014. They argue that if this is the case then EA would need to test the game on current-gen consoles and so will have to release it on the PS3 and the Xbox 360 as well.

There are a number of ways to look at this news along with the article we mentioned above, one of which might have killed off any hope of a PlayStation 4 or the next Xbox coming anytime soon. If we are to believe that Battlefield 4 will be a current-gen release then we wouldn’t expect the release of the next-gen consoles from Sony or Microsoft until maybe 2015, but this is just an assumption.

However, maybe some gamers would suggest that EA would not want BF4 to be a next-gen release and would rather wait until both consoles have had time to prove themselves. This is just what we think will happen with Grand Theft Auto V, as it’s much better to release such a huge title on current consoles that have such a huge install base.

There is another theory though, the Battlefield 4 beta might be PC only and will release on next-gen consoles once they arrive, but will this limit the improvements to the game that would come if there were a console beta as well? Do you believe that we are still on track for a late 2013 release date for the PS4 and next Xbox, or is 2014/2015 more realistic?

It is likely that the Xbox 720 and 360 will be running the same os at or around the launch of the 720. This really only leaves hardware compatibility as the main difference between the two for game titles. It is also likely that bf4 could launch on both consoles. They practically did the same thing with bf2mc on the original xbox and 360. Ea and dice will soon realize, if they haven't already, that a new console puts them at a huge advantage over rival Activision and its call of duty properties. this is because bf3 and likely bf4 are pc games refitted and scaled down for consoles. whereas the most recent cod games haven't really taken advantage of newer PC capabilities on their PC releases, meaning a lot of work is ahead of their development teams if they don't want to make their first cod title on the 720 look like black ops 2 with more particles and window dressing. With this said, bf4 would almost be a waste on 360. The only reason, I think, for dual console release would be for a larger potential consumer base. This also makes me curious as to the possibility of cross platform multi player over 360 and 720. If they are only releasing bf4 on 360, then it is likely that the 720 won't be available until 2014, latest 2015. If this is the case, then we will likely see bad company 3 around console release. We can only hope that the wii u is a huge success, prompting microsoft to accelerate development and production.

i think a lot of these gaming companies need to get over themselves and look at the bigger issue on hand. providing the public with playable, decent looking games. we get a lot of the same bs every year. call of dty 6, halo 4 battlefield 3, assassins creed 3, a;; good games but it ends up leading to this thing 2, this thing 3 or 4. where is the innovative technology going? seems to go around on a loop. both consoles can not stretch any further. they are preset. made to only due so much. most power lies within these game designers..to want a release of a new console is almost obselete. drop hundreds of dollars to play the same series over an over? if it was me, id at least try to make different outtakes and new releases. not beat the same dead horse. we want something to expect in the future that will be worth while. lot of fans..lot of news reporters and all that other grabage harass microsoft or sony or nintendo/ let them do their thing and hope for the best. they got more things to worry about then small things like petty arguements of whehn its coming out or what its going to be like. if they wanted people to know theyd do so.

Its possible for EA to release a beta just to get a reaction from the people on a new console before bringing out the whole game, like a test bench. It's also possible for EA to release BF4 to get people excited and looking forward to what they have on a new console... at least they would be releasing something and not left out of the running for new games completely. I think the latter is most likely though.

Well first off Microsoft will rush out product like they did when 360 came out, thinking to get a head start on Sony. like last time Microsoft will let something stupid pass by in all the rush and have a "red ring esc" problem. Sony will wait and see what Microsoft releases and add to their system. Why do you think Sony plays blu ray and xbox doesnt? I'll sit back and wait for sonys next console. I was a xbox fan boy till I wasted money on 2 xbox 360's BEFORE their warrenty announcment and I love ps ever since. Anyway ps3 is still next gen. Once they figure out another write and codes for games we will really see the potential of current systems power, minus the wii ofcourse.

i was a sony fan boy till my acount was hacked twice i lost my credit card info and stuff nw ill just wait for 720

This is one rumor of many. The leaked Microsoft documents are the biggest proponent of next fall being the case, among two or three other strong evidences. My initial thoughts were that it WOULD be a PC only beta, and that will likely be the case if the other rumors are true in supporting a fall 2013 release of the 720.

This doesn't necessarily debunk the rumors that the next generation consoles will debut next fall since they're supposed to be more standardized (pc architecture). They could test on PC and then port to consoles with minimal issues. I still don't think they'll be released next fall, however, due to the initial costs of launching a new console.
