Skyrim Dawnguard PS3 debacle feeds conspiracy theories

Skyrim Dawnguard PS3 debacle feeds conspiracy theories

When it comes to Dawnguard and other Skyrim DLC PlayStation 3 owners have just about had enough of waiting for something that might or might not come, and we can understand how many gamers are boycotting other titles which Bethesda are involved in, but when it comes down to it the lack of communication is what really winds us up. The response from many relate this to the problems we have with politicians, and some gamers have come up various conspiracy theories for why this situation is becoming more of an issue as time goes on.

If Bethesda came out and said there is not going to be any DLC for the PS3, issuing a heartfelt apology this may go some way to help their cause, although some gamers have totally given up hope. Some feel the only stance they can make is by not buying any products they know Bethesda can make money from. Looking at various comments and feedback through various forums a relative point was made about a restaurant scenario where Bethesda was dishing up two meals ordered by Xbox and PlayStation owners, yet after ordering the same, the PS3 user was told that their meal was not available, but the Xbox users got theirs on time.

The problem we have here is that the PS3 owner has not even been told their meal is not coming, they have just been made to wait, with a notion that Bethesda will provide some form of compensation for the inconvenience. Rather than apologize for not delivering their order it seems that Bethesda are just shrugging their shoulders. The main difference here is that you would walk out of a restaurant like this with no intention of returning, but you would still have that money in your pocket. In this instance, some gamers feel that they are being treated like children and Bethesda’s plans and promises much like what politicians say are not legal contracts.

Skyrim Dawnguard PS3 debacle feeds conspiracy theories

Those intending to boycott titles like Dishonored may feel that this tit for tat reaction is not just about the Dawnguard fiasco, but more about the quality of communication, as updates on their official page would give gamers some insight, instead of giving us Peter Hines to throw our comments at. Hines will have to take responsibility for working with a company like Bethesda just as Dishonored developers Arkane Studios will for having the wrong publisher. Some gamers have asked questions about whether the PS3 in hard to code for, as this console has been around for sometime, although no other gaming company has had these issues.

With that in mind, Skyrim is a large open world environment and the coding is not the only problem as the two 256 MB blocks of RAM for the PlayStation 3 has one dedicated to the operating system, taking the likes of Skyrim to the limit of the console. The current gen systems are six to seven years old now, so these new titles are bound to present issues, and this should be taken into consideration by both gamers and developers. In a recent post we spoke about the lack of Dawnguard optimism and highlighted the amount of updates we had prior to the release of Dawnguard, yet this stopped as soon as soon as the Xbox 360 and the PC received two DLCs.

On a more positive note, the lack of communication could mean the DLC for the PS3 is close to completion or they may just be ignoring it hoping that things will just move on. Being optimistic we are going with the first, as Bethesda still maintain new content will be available for all platforms, and some code for the latest Skyrim PC 1.08 patch suggests this is the case. Have you given up on Skyrim DLC and Bethesda in general?

Bethesda are losing money a lot of it there not just going to let that happen they will most likely be try.

Totally given up on Sykrim, traded it in last weekend doubt if will get it back if Dawngaurd ever comes out. Not holding out much hope for it no more .Surely when you make a game you which you know your going to make DLC for, you have designed it so it can work with DLC ? If problem were known from the outset then why not just advised PS3 would not get the DLC as would cause too many in games issues rather then this sad state of affairs. PS3 owners would still be pissed but would have gotten over it eventually(apart form the fanboys who never forget).

Bethesda is holding out for their "Game of the year Edition" so that PS3 owners will have to buy the whole game a 2nd time if they want the DLC. They were quoted as saying that releasing Dawnguard now would not be "good for everyone". They were talking about $, not performance.

todays consoles are like a 2 cylinder 35 horsepower engine, playing skyrim on them is like throwing the engine in a half ton car, its slow and cumbersome. this is what Bethesda has to deal with. Bethesda has admited that it is their problem and not sony's, but if we look at how outdated the consoles are the true problem becomes clear. I will compare the specs to show you the difference. todays console 3 core3.2 ghz overclocked CPU 256( PS3 the xbox has 512) mb of ram, 550 ( PS3 the Xbox has 500) mhz graphics. todays average offshelf pc, 4 core 3.2 Ghz CPU 8gb( 8000mb) of RAM, 810 mhz graphics.

Ha yes bethesda could suck my damn tit i gave up on bethesda they call jump off the face of the earth, If Gears can send DLC's to all platform on time like they promised them Bethesda is just being to damn lazy NEWS FLASH that does give a damn about PSN users they dont

Heck I say they should just have a deal where you can send in your PS3 Copy and get a free PC copy and Free Dawnguard. Then they should promise never to make another Elder Scrolls for PS3 since they are too incompetent to do what every other developer can.

hey guys just wanted to say i'm 13 and i can see that it takes money y to fix things like this so those of you who are thinking of boycotting Bethesda you will only make it harder for them to get dawn guard and harthfire out for ps3. so think about that cause i know what happens if you do boycott.

Doesn't look like we'll get any DLC anyways, so I think a boycott is great. I'd love to see Bethesda go out of business and file for bankruptcy (I know that wont happen but it'd be nice)

I still buy Bethesda games on my PS3, I just have patients, we will get it eventually. I'm loving Dishonored by the way, bought the Collectors edition :)

I really hate to say this but Bethesda just lost a client. I haven't played Skyrim in 4 months and I really don't care to play it anymore. Also, I'm not buying anything else that's Bethesda. I wasted too much money on half a game and I'm not going to do that again. I'm not even pissed off at them anymore. Now, I don't even care that they exist.

You guys should see the latest article on whatculture (dawnguard) The writer are blaming us! The reason im writing it here is cuz i can't post a comment there. That writer is saying that we shouldn't even be angry cuz it's making us look bad!!!! can you believe this?! He said that xbox had to wait for the gta expansion and we should be patient!!!!! If you are reading this you gotta get your head of your ass!!! We been waiting for 5 months now! We should all stay in line and punch this a$$! While he way crying about xbox not getting gta the expansions cuz it was exclusive on ps3, we (ps3) are experiencing this bull$hit almost everytime a multiplatfrom game is released. And he said we shouldn't be expecting ANY dlc cuz it was not annouced for us!!! On the back of my skyrim copy it clearly says ADD-ON CONTENT. ANd no, patches aren't add-on they are merely a fix so that Bethesda won't be spending the rest of they're lives living in a bin.

Yeah... I am kind of done with Bethseda now. Sorry.... guys. You made a great game with Fallout 3 which you put addons the ps3 for. You also made skyrim.. and I love it, but until you put dawngaurd and any other dlcs onto the ps3 for skyrim I won't buy anymore Bethseda games. If you want to give me a free steam pc version of Skyrim then I may buy the addons on PC... but yeah sorry this is just a little too coincidental for me. I absolutely fail to believe that the company is having a technical issue with a DLC game they have already put out on the PS3. Especially given the duration..

I think maybe for the next dlcs that they should make xbox and pc wait for tje dlcs like we had to wait

I feel that some people got it, some didn't. Curiosity was the definitive motivational factor for why I am posting here on this matter today. That being after reviewing months of posts on this subject- as well as the game-makers's own forums - I have come to the conclusion stated above. Here's why. The resources or availability of responses to complaints seems to be confined to a twitter page of the company's PR spokesman. Not being a holder of an MBA, I gotta say this is suicide.( for business). Bethesda didn't want this, which begs the question- how the hell did we get here? Forget blaming consoles. Free dlc, or, for that matter, "finally fixing it" may be an enabling factor. Honesty and accountability are rare and sought after qualities which we judge in others as we focus in ourselves. Bethesda has to answer to this.

Hey have a look at the Bethblog site now Gstaff replied to my comment. "Hey Will Content is being worked on for all platforms, but we’re not ready to make any formal announcements. When we do, we’ll post it here on the blog, Twitter, and anywhere else we can. Thanks for you patience"

I went to Pete Hines twitter a person ask about the status DLC for the ps3 and then ask if they hate the ps3? Pete tweet back saying the status is the same and he is a ps3 user if that was so he would have bought dishonour on ps3 did he no. Any company who treat it fans badly it does not matter what console from x-box, pc, to ps3. The user have the to say this wrong to treat all console with fair aslo some people here all they are doing is trying to start console war it sad they could wast that much time when they have DLC. I hoping the ps3 will have good news by the end of the month. I give up on Bethesda ever producing the DLC. I hope company learn from this mistake it will cost them there fan base.

There are two things they can do 1st, (and I hope this is what happens) they release this new content which is rumoured about with dawnguard and with heartfire all in one package, maybe a little bit more expensive but a lot less then the individual price's (Maybe free to PS plus members) I sont even care if xbox and PC get it at the same time because I'm not spiteful and its not their fault. 2nd release an official apology for their piss poor performance so we can move forward. I see their silence as either, they are close or havnt made any improvement but have not given up.

Everyone in the comments section is saying there pissed and that it's Bethesda's fault. It's a little more complicated than bethesda being incompetent. Bethesda is a relatively new company on ps3 and the ps3 is a pretty hard system to code for. Not only that Bethesda has to allocate their resources to promoting dishonored and keeping Skyrim up to date, not to mention the announced the Elder Scrolls Online and if I'm right of mind fallout 4 is just around the corner. Also they made a deal with Microsoft and that gives Microsoft a priority, so they also have to work on the next dlc. All in all they have alot to do and are probably being so overloaded with complaints that they can't update ps3 owners

if that is the case than that would definitely be Bethesda's fault.

Bethesda, you are WAY to late. i already pre ordered Assasins Creed 3. i garantee theirs gonna be a couple bugs, but at least ubisoft (the company that makes Assasins Creed) actually makes sure its good for ALL systems, then releases it. so bethesda, i hope your company goes bankrupt.

wow comparing ubisoft to Bethesda, hmm lets see ubisoft hasnt changed their design since the first assasins creed, uses someone elses game engine, and cheaply throws games together in a matter of months, Bethesda completly remakes their game engine, every game is redesigned from ground up, and one of very few developers that innovate.Comparing a EA owned franchise to Bethesda is a horrible comparison

Assassin's Creed II,Brotherhood, and Revelations were all radically different from the first Assassins Creed. And Bethesda used the same engine they had in Oblivion for both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas all three of which were similar in many ways so that line saying "every game is redesigned from ground up" is a complete lie. Don't try to hold Bethesda up as some model for game designing excellence.

Part of me wants to think that this has a lot to do with Microsoft, but I still want to believe that they are still engaged in the search for a solution. My experience tells me that if it comes, it will be in the Game of the Year Edition. The fact is, Pete Hines line about DLC never being promised to the PS3 is crap. Since when has there been a Bethesda game that didn't have DLC. I myself don't buy very many games, but when I do I purchase games that will last, and that I'm sure will eventually get DLC. If I don't see DLC for Skyrim, I won't be able to depend on Bethesda for my games. P.S. How could you leave gamers hanging on the Dragonborn story arc? Isn't that the concept the game was centered around? Kinda seems like you intended to create DLC for that. Maybe just not for the PS3 eh? It's like a good T.V series that doesn't get picked up for another season.

Now @2e0be4dfa050d0435b2624e0c457e38d:disqus here has hit the nail on the head - it's more about 'the expectation' than what is actually promised anywhere, and I admit that I too buy Bethesda games because I expect a degree of longevity to them (either through the base game and/or the DLC). But that's just me - nobody actually told me I was getting any of that. And good analogy with the TV series too - try watching anything on SyFy - it's either already been cancelled before its time or it's about to be!

bethesda would probably take a huge hit in finacials if ps3 owners boycotted them, as they are already having money problems.

Bethesda and their parent subsidiaries have made over $650m profits in the last 12 months and that is not taking into account the revenues accumulated through existing DLC or even the highly-grossing Dishonored. Even if the PS3 wasn't accounted for; the model and reduced costings for major maintstream products is surpringly low. Therefor they have no excuse but to maintain an consistent and satisfactory service for gamers across the board.

What the devil is with the restaurant analogy? It's absurd... The actual correlation would be more along the lines of: If Jack and Peter both ordered a Grand Slam at Denny's and extra eggs to complement their meal, Jack receives his Grand Slam and extra eggs. All the while Peter receives his Grand Slam as-is, but no mention of the extra eggs. That's more like it. But even still, it's a joke. I mean seriously, this half-assed analogy is the meat and potatoes of the article? This is poor journalism.

The analogy IS terrible, and it doesn't even work as written. If they wanted to stick with the restaurant analogy a more accurate one would be something like... Jack decides he wants a burger and can pick from BK, Wendy's and Sonic. Peter lives somewhere where a Sonic hasn't been built so he doesn't have that option. It's not someone waiting for their meal because it's not as if PS3 users have paid for DLC and not gotten it yet; it's a matter of a product not being available to purchase for them. Very different things.

First off, I have played elder scrolls since morrowind or be buying your games for over 10 years. As you said, if this where a restaurant, I would have walked out months ago. It is one thing to explain to me you aren't coming out with it (dawngaurd), it's an entirely different matter when you outright refuse to give us an explanation for something you PROMISED us. Don't expect me to put any money towards your company until you learn to respect you customers and refrain from showing favoritism to those who purchased other platforms that are SUPPOSE to be compatible with your DLC/updates. It is completely irresponsible on Bethesda's part and no one else is at fault for leaving us in the dark...blame goes to the developer.

They never PROMISED anything! Where are you retreads getting this from? Is there some alternate reality I'm not aware of that says that being able to downlod 'something' means you'll get everything that you've ever wished for?

let that be true but if u look at gameinformer issue 231 page 55 they advertise it being on ps3 so if anything they should be getting sued for false dvertisement

Calm down with the name calling dude. It's really hard to empathize with your point of view when you belligerently bash... And even misspell your insults.

Well it was actually misspelled deliberately, in case somebody felt it was a swipe at those genuinely less mentally capable, but left so that those not insulted by the actual word would get what I meant... and granted, yes, I SHOULD be a lot less angry about the whole affair because I'm not in any way being attacked or slighted... but I just get so damned infuriated by the logic some people are applying to this. Do they honestly think that a company would deliberately LOSE revenue by promising something they had no intention of delivering? They may be having trouble with it, and it may not even be possible to fix, but they gain nothing at all by lying to anyone, and they know that. I work in a support role, and personally I feel that their time is better spent trying to fix this rather than making up timescales just to make consumers feel they have more control over fate than they actually do!

You know, i been thinking about this fiasco since it started and i thinkk Bethesda may actually be ok with losing the possible sales from the PS3 customers. What if they only ever considered the profit from the base Skyrim game in their profit projections? What if they never actually intended to make DLC for the PS3 version? I mean it wasn't even started until after the initial Xbox 360 exclusivity ended most likely; and is probably just a bad port of Xbox 360 code just like the base PS3 version is. So really there is no R&D money to recoup. They got a tidy sum off of us PS3 suckers free and clear(4 million copies sold @ $60 a pop-do that math). Why bother to, even try and do DLC for the ole PS3 eh? Especially when they have nimrods a-plenty to take up for them. Even when they are completely in the wrong. Droves of idiots arguing minutiae that flies in the face of common sense and disregards it completely. Great time to be Bethesda! Not so great a time to be a Bethesda customer....if you play on PS3.

Agree with TSUK - unlike Activision or EA, Bethesda aren't contractually obliged to fulfill the wishes of all gamers. They accept the loss in revenue and we the gamer misses out. Everyone is a loser at the end of the day.

I could have sworn my PS3 copy of Skyrim says "Add-On Content" right across the back. Or are you going to go ahead and say that the "Add-On Content" were the patches ?

Mounted combat? Kill cams? Basically anything 'additional' that wasn't in the original release.. Didn't I already say this? What you expect 'Add-On Content' to be and what it is may be different, but legally the wording covers both. Now is anyone saying that's what Bethesda intended all along? Certainly not - they wouldn't bother claiming to work on additional content if they never intended to deliver; that'd be commercial suicide. But does it mean that you're ENTITLED to it? No, it doesn't, and if it was challenged legally, the above argument would be considered valid. So, have we put the 'false advertising' chant to bed yet?

I am not buying it... It would seem that there is more to this than just DLC and that there is all that big a difference between PS3 and 360. 1. There have been thousands of DLCs for PS3 in the past with zero-to-minor problems by both Bethesda and other game companies. There was DLC for Oblivion, Fallout 3 / Fallout NV and little problems there. This is what I think is going on... Bethesda was busy trying to launch a bunch of things at once. Instead of admitting there was some bad planning... they get the 360 community to blame the PS3 architecture. Well I have thousands (note the s on thousands) of hours of play time on the 360 and the PS3 and as a computer engineer... the PS3 is superior in many ways except the controller weight and feel. I like my 360 and still play Oblivion on it... it just has to be cool with liquid helium to keep it from locking up. 2. the PS3 is more like a PC in every way than the 360. I have one right now being used as a PC. So why again is the port all that big a deal? Oh yeah some Microsoft slaves said that the interfaces of the PS3 was more difficult to deal with... r i g h t... I think Bethesda has their folks working on the Elderscrolls online right now and PS3 may or may not see any DLC... They cut PS3 short on Oblivion with fewer DLCs. So if I can see this so has the competition Bethesda and they are to be sure moving to take that nice big market share away from you. You cannot treat customers like this (regardless of what community they are in PS3/360) and think folks won't buy elsewhere. I mean what company alienates 45 million customers? Netflix?... oh THERE is a winner...

There not blaming PS3 they even said themselves its there fault.

Y'all are fags..fuck video games go out and get laidor something

Vin Diesel plays Dungeons and Dragons, and I guarantee you he gets more ass than you've ever seen. I'd even bet that your girlfriend would beg for the chance to roleplay a naughty Elven Wizard just to enjoy being punished by his Revenant Paladin. By the way, how did you just so happen to stumble upon this article whilst scamming for babes at your local party scene? Jog on, uberbro.

LMFAO man these comments are hilarious. :-D I need to visit this site more often...

Why don't you go somewhere that's good if you care that much?

LMAO... you know I agree with the ladder part of your statement but there's no need for the sexual slurs. Some people play video games to detox from everyday work, stress, traffic jam, political ads, etc. By the way... what is "laidor"?

i think he didn't used the space bar lol. i do agree with playing video games to detox from every day life..( juice your such a dumb ass ).

I was pissed off about this for a long time but recently I just feel hopeless. I am quite saddened by their lack of communication and the inability to make Dawnguard work or give us something else in the meantime. I just cannot believe they can't make something work even if they have to scrap Dawnguard. I had Oblivion on 360 and loved all the DLC. I bought a PS3 as well last year and eventually sold the 360 because I started buying games on PS3. I wish now I had kept my 360 so I could play some of the DLC content for Skyrim. This is beyond irritating, it's pathetic and irresponsible on their part. They are probably thinking, well maybe if we just ignore it long enough everyone will forget and we can move on..... that's childish.

I gave up. Sold my copy of skyrim.
