30-year-old Parasite star Park So-Dam has been diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer.

The South Korean actress told CNN that she discovered she had the disease during a regular checkup with her doctor, and quickly underwent surgery to remove a cancerous mass from her neck.

Park is currently gearing up for the release of her new movie, Special Delivery, but has announced that she will no longer be participating in the upcoming press tour for the film so she can focus on recovering – something that has left her ‘very disappointed.’

She was not given any information by her management about the time she was first diagnosed or the date of the surgery. 

According to reports, papillary thyroid cancer is the most common thyroid cancer – and makes up around 80 per cent of all thyroid cancer cases.

Although it is not clear what causes cancer, certain genetic conditions and family history as well as the age and gender of the patients can play an important role in the diagnosis.

Papillary Thyroid Cancer is usually not noticeable. But, it can happen in some cases.

Peak onset can occur between the ages of 30-50 and more often in women than it does in men.

This kind of cancer has an excellent cure rate. The 10-year survival rates for patients diagnosed with papillary Thyroid Cancer are estimated to be over 90 percent. 

According to WebMD, it is often treated with surgery, but doctors can also use Radioactive iodine (RAI) ablation in severe cases, as well as thyroid hormone pills.
