It is believed that troops stole precious swords, a brass skull with crossbones and worth thousands of dollars from a regimental headquarters.

On Monday, the historic items were taken from the Office of the Commanding Officer Royal Lancers.

Also, vouchers intended to be prizes for troops’ hard work were taken.

Only military personnel have access to the headquarters, which is located in Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire.

The skull and crossbones sculpture which sat on the CO’s desk represents the regiment’s cap badge and is known as ‘Death or Glory’.

The thefts, described as a ‘kick in the teeth’ by one Lancers soldier, came as some troops were deployed at NHS facilities to help fight Covid.

The items are worth at least £3,000 but have a lot more sentimental value as they are part of regimental history.

Last night an Army spokesman said: ‘We are aware of an incident in Catterick. As the matter is currently the subject of an ongoing Royal Military Police investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment.’
