For a brand new record, all aboard! The longest uninterrupted railway trip in the world now allows travelers to travel all the way from Portugal and Singapore.

  • End of route stops in Singapore, Moscow, Beijing and Laos
  • According to experts, a hypothetical 11,654-mile trip could be completed in just 21 days.
  • Reddit users calculated the route with Mark Smith, a train buff.

Lasting at least 21 days and covering 11,654 miles, it is the ultimate challenge for train buffs.

Experts think a record-breaking length of continuous rail travel has been established.

It is possible now to travel via train between Lagos (in southern Portugal) and Singapore thanks to Laos’s opening of its railway earlier this month.

Experts say the journey of 11,654 miles could be completed in just 21 days, allowing overnight accommodations to connect and get visas.

This is the longest rail journey of around 1,000 miles. It was made possible due to the opening of the railway linking Vientiane (the capital) and Boten near the Chinese border on December 2.

Users of Reddit have calculated the journey with Mark Smith, a British enthusiast for trains, using some short interstations.

How it's now possible to travel by train from southern Portugal in western Europe to Singapore in East Asia

You can now travel from South Portugal (West Europe) to Singapore (East Asia) by train

Start with an Atlantic Dip in Lagos, Algarve. Then, make your way through Europe and Siberia.

Next, you’ll travel south through China Laos Thailand Thailand Malaysia, Thailand and Malaysia, where you might end up at Singapore Sling in Raffles.

Chinese constructed the Laos railway, the first of its kind in the Landlocked Country.

It allows the intrepid rail traveller to get from Beijing to Bangkok by rail – a gap that would previously have to have been largely crossed by bus – and then on to Singapore.

In the past, the journey took about 10,500 miles.

“But now, there’s the cross Laos railway. This is a remarkable achievement.

It will take approximately 21 days for Mr Smith to finish the journey, according to seat61.com.

This will take so long as travellers have to spend the night along the route in Lisbon, Madrid, Paris and Beijing. They will also have to stay at least two nights in Moscow.

But to make the complete journey they will have to wait because two of the longest legs – Paris to Moscow and Moscow to Beijing – are currently suspended due to the pandemic.  The trip could cost a little over £1,000.
