All it takes is time. In 2022, Instagram will bring back the chronological feed – six year after it was abandoned in favor of an algorithmically sorted one

  • Instagram was chronological until 2016, with the most recent at the top.
  • Users were dismayed when it introduced an algorithmically sorted feed.
  • This algorithm considers factors such as how likely it is that you will interact with others.
  • Adam Mosseri is the Instagram Head. He has just confirmed that the option to have a chronological feed again will be available in the first quarter.

It was replaced by an algorithmically sorted Instagram feed in 2016 and has since been one of Instagram’s most popular features.

Now, Instagram has finally announced the news that we’ve all been waiting for – the chronological feed is finally making a return.

The Instagram chief Adam Mosseri said the same during yesterday’s hearing before the Senate subcommittee. He stated that the platform is actively working to make it happen.

Although the timeline is not clear, Mosseri stated that it will likely be launched ‘in Q1 of next year.

Instagram followed on from Mr Mosseri's hearing with further information on Twitter this morning

What is the process of an algorithmically sorted feed?

A computer algorithm determines the order of the posts on the feed. This has been in effect since 2016.

This algorithm considers many factors, such as how likely it is that you will interact with it via comments or likes.

“In Feed,” Mr Mosseri said, “In Feed the five interactions that we most closely look at are whether you’re likely to spend a few minutes on a post and comment on it. Like it. Save it. And tap on the profile picture.”

The higher you see the post, the more likely it is that you will take action. As we work to improve our ability to find what you are interested in, signals and predictions will be added and removed over time.

Following Mr Mosseri’s hearing, Instagram provided additional information via Twitter today.

The statement stated, “We want people having meaningful control over their experiences.”

“We have been playing around with Favourites. This allows you to choose which posts you would like to see in a higher order. We are also working on another way to show posts by people that you follow chronologically.

Instagram stated that the chronological feed will not be the one we saw back in 2015.

‘We want to be clear that we’re creating new options — providing people with more choices so they can decide what works best for them — not switching everyone back to a chronological feed,’ it added.

“You can look forward to more information on this topic in the early part of next year!”

Instagram’s feeds were organized chronologically until 2016, with the latest posts being first.

However, the algorithm determines the order of the posts within the feed over the last five years.

Mosseri wrote in his blog that the reason behind the change was: “By 2016, people were missing 70% all their Feed posts, including nearly half from close friends.

“So we designed and created a Feed to rank posts based upon what you most care about.”

The news has been welcomed by many users on Twitter, with one joking that our 'prayers have been answered'

Twitter users welcomed the news, and one joked that prayers have been answered.

“The higher the stakes, and more probable you are to do an action, the better you’ll be able to see the post. Over time we add and subtract signals and make predictions, in an effort to better understand what interests you.

Instagram claims the algorithm prevents users from missing any posts. However, many people have called for the return chronological feed.

Many users have welcomed the news on Twitter. One joked that it was our prayers being answered.

A user commented: “Instagram finally brings back chronological order!” 2022 looking real nice already.’

One more: Instagram allows us to put our feeds back in order chronologically, which is healing.

Instagram introduces a new feature that gives users additional information to help them identify fake accounts.

Instagram launched an anti-fake account crackdown, adding a feature that shows users who really is behind the username.

After weeks of similar steps by parent Facebook, the Photo-sharing app with more than 1,000,000 users can now verify accounts.

Users can see what advertisements are running on their account and where they’re located. They also have the ability to view username changes over the past year.

To learn more about an account, go to their Profile, tap the … menu and then select ‘About This Account.’

You will find the Instagram account’s date of creation, its country, shared followers and accounts that have been updated in the past year.

Instagram plans to increase the number of verified Instagram accounts for celebrities and public figures.

Each applicant will have to supply their full name and copy of any legal or business identification along with an account username.

Instagram said that third-party apps, such as DUO Mobile Authenticator and Google Authenticator will be allowed to use two-factor authentication in order to secure users’ accounts.
