To combat climate change and boost energy efficiency, every new building will have to be equipped with charging points for electric cars.

  • Boris Johnson, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom will announce that new homes and buildings must install electric vehicle charging stations by next year.
  • Supermarkets, as well workplaces, will need to have charging points installed on-site
  • Property undergoing major renovations may also require upgrades

Boris Johnson, today, will confirm that new buildings and homes will need to have electric vehicle charging points by next year.

In a speech to the Confederation of British Industry annual conference, the Prime Minister is set to announce legislation to drive an electric car ‘revolution’.

The law requires charging points to be standard in all new-build properties, workplaces, and supermarkets. Major renovations of homes will require the same.

New-build homes, supermarkets and workplaces will have to install charging points by law

All new-built homes, workplaces, and supermarkets must install charging points according to law

Mr Johnson is expected to say: ‘We will require new homes and buildings to have EV charging points, with another 145,000 charging points to be installed thanks to these regulations.

‘We are investing in new projects to turn wind power into hydrogen, and the ten-point plan investments have already triggered about £90billion of private sector investment.’

Downing Street branded the move as ‘world-leading’ and the hope is that charging an electric vehicle will become as easy as filling up with fuel.

Labour leader Sir Keir Sternmer will address the conference and pledge fiscal discipline.

He will say: ‘Labour will establish an Office for Value for Money. Just as you scrutinise the cost of your business, we will do the same on behalf of the tax-paying public.’
