Christmas Day is rapidly approaching and many people have yet to decorate their trees.

But before you start, make sure you aren’t guilty of committing one of these common festive décor mistakes.

The experts at ChristmasTreeWorld.co.uk spoke to FEMAIL about the common festive faux-pas that people usually commit, from hanging the baubles before the lights to leaving your tree stand exposed.

The experts explained that fairy lights are the best way to get the most out of your Christmas fir. They also suggested that you hang your Christmas cards on a string near your fireplace or mantlepiece so that they don’t go forgotten.

FEMAIL has 13 errors you should avoid.

1. Not taking measurements

Just the right size: When you are debating what size Christmas tree you want, it is absolutely vital that you take the correct measurements, not just from top to bottom, but also you need to see how big of an area you have. Stock image

It is crucial that when you’re deciding on the size of your Christmas tree, you measure from top to base.

Too big trees can feel overwhelming and can fill your home with unnecessary clutter. A perfect tree can add a special touch to your home.

A thing to note is the back of your tree will rarely be seen so if you’re short on baubles and lights focus the majority at the front.

2. The fairy isn’t real lights

Don't be caught out! It is surprising how many people will put up their lights just to plug them in and realise that they aren’t working or the bulbs are broken. It will save you so much time if you make sure they're working before you hang them up. Stock image

This will help you save time and make your life easier.

Replace them if they become damaged.

3. Inadequacy of symmetry

Many houses hang ornaments on Christmas trees haphazardly. This can make it look overcrowded and cramped.

It is possible to avoid this by creating a plan for how your Christmas tree should look. It is important to evenly distribute your decorations, while also keeping in mind symmetry.

4. Hang ornaments in the first place

It is fun to display your trinkets and baubles, but it can make it more difficult.

Hang the lights first to get the perfect look without worrying about the baubles.

5. Choose only one type of bauble

While it’s nice to see a show home with nice finishes and clean lines, your home should be your own.

Make sure to reflect your personality and add your personal touch to the decor.

This can be done by mixing baubles to make them look more interesting or creating your own decorations that show off your creative side.

6. Forgetting the inner branches

Don't be tempted: Your decorations shouldn’t just dangle at the edge of branches, make sure you are pushing larger baubles to the inside of the tree where they will look best. Stock image

Your decorations shouldn’t just dangle at the edge of branches, make sure you are pushing larger baubles to the inside of the tree where they will look best.

Longer decorations are better for decorating the branches’ edges (e.g. icicles, candy canes). They give the tree an inside glow that gives it a warm, dazzling appearance.

You should also make sure that decorations are placed on hidden back branches, in case of tree movement.

7. The tree is left exposed

You can hide that your artificial tree is there or just keep the branches covered.

Presents and gift bags are the best way to protect them.

9. Don’t forget your Christmas cards

Sometimes Christmas cards can create a cluttered look on counters.

These are great for adding a festive flair to any room in your house. You can hang them on your windows, mantlepiece or walls if you don’t have enough space.

10.  The garden should not be decorated

Share the festive cheer!A key part of Christmas is community so bring the festive cheer to your street. If you have a tree outside, why not wrap it with lights or line your home with lights. Stock image

While decoration is the main part of Christmas, it is not the only important aspect. Community is also a crucial part.

Light up your tree and line it up with lights.

11. It is best to leave it for the very last moment

You might get distracted by the Christmas festivities and socialising and put off decorating. However, it is easier to become complacent.

You have the opportunity to create a new family tradition in your home and invite everyone into it. But decorating should not be stressful.

You can enjoy the festivities by getting it done before others and still have plenty of time for you to make any necessary additions.

13. Failure to prepare for them when they are being taken down

No one likes to talk about taking down the decorations before they are even up, but it is so easy to just put everything into one box and shove it where it’ll fit to try and make sure putting it away is as fast as possible.

Spending the extra time to organise decorations can make a big difference in your decorating game next year. It will also save you time and effort untangling wires.
