Joanna Scanlan appears in the highly anticipated second season of Gentleman Jack, which has become a global phenomenon

Joanna Scanlan enjoyed being invited into the ‘licentious’ world of Gentleman Jack, the hit TV drama starring Suranne Jones as the swaggering 19th-century title character.

Scanlan will be appearing in the second season, which is a huge success and has already become an international phenomenon.

She plays Isabella ‘Tib’ Norcliffe, a ‘wild and great spirit’ who was a friend — and sometime lover — of Anne Lister, real name of Jones’s Regency era ‘Gentleman Jack’.

Scanlan stated that Norcliffe, a hunter, shooter, and fishing landowner, was an exciting person who had fun.

I was told by her that “She was fearless.” ‘A lot of women were doing their own thing — if they were fortunate enough to have the means.’

These women are rare to hear about because they were subject to what Jane Austefication called the “Jane Austefication” of that time, which was frowned on for their ‘licentiousness’ and’sexuality.” They did exist.

After her victory at last Sunday’s BIFA Awards, in which she won best actress, the actress seemed in a buoyant mood. She was lauded for her performance in Aleem Khan’s After Love.

Mary, an Islamic convert, plays her role.

Scanlan, who starred as Catherine in No Offence and The Thick Of It, Getting On, and most recently The Larkins (as Ma), was praised for her big screen performance. She is the first woman to be inducted into the UK Film Awards Season.

It is my sincere hope that the BFI will screen After Love for BAFTA voters.

The actress was in Wales filming The Light In The Hall, aka Y Golau. This thriller is for S4C/Channel 4.

Because the drama’s six parts are being shot in Welsh as well as English, it takes a lot of time. “It’s my first film in Welsh!” I was told by her.

Scanlan was born in Wirral and participated in Language And Journey, a programme that taught Welsh to her by Welsh speakers. She was filmed by the filmmakers and given the part of a mother looking for restitution after the death of her child 18 years earlier.

Scanlan was preparing to play the part and found that she liked stories involving families of murdered victims… Bibaa Heinrich, Nicole Smallman (Sarah Everard), Sabina Nessa… ‘There are, unfortunately, so many examples.’

Beverley Knight and her leading men in The Drifters Girl — Adam J Bernard, Tarinn Callender, Matt Henry and Tosh Wanogho-Maud — are heading to the recording studio soon, to lay down the show’s cast album.

Audiences have been dancing in the aisles to their renditions of Drifters’ hits, such as Saturday Night At The Movies or Under The Boardwalk.

The show’s been playing to full houses at the Garrick Theatre and producer Michael Harrison, who is giving the five headliners a share of the profits, has extended the booking period until July 2 — a major vote of confidence at a tricky time for West End productions.

The musical has amended its schedule — effective from February 22 — to include matinee and evening performances on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays; with single performances on Tuesdays and Fridays, to reflect new audience patterns in London.

John Kerry, former Secretary of State and U.S. Climate Envoy, was sitting right in front me on Wednesday night at the theatre.

As you would, I thanked James Graham for his services as we watched Best Of Enemies at the Young Vic.

Kerry was immediately drawn to this scene. Charles Edwards and David Harewood portray American political stars William F. Buckley Jr. and Gore Vidal. They were matched up in an infamous series on televised verbal fistfights that took place during the 1968 Republican and Democratic presidential conventions. (which was won by Richard Nixon and Hubert Humphrey).

I could see Kerry, himself a one-time presidential candidate, nodding in agreement — and letting out the occasional laugh — as events he was familiar with unfolded.

The Young Vic and Headlong co-produced this drama. It is directed by Jeremy Herrin. I suspect it will move to the West End. . . New York.
