Hanukkah, also known as “the festival of light”, is an eight-day celebration that includes food and prayer.
It is dedicated to the Jewish rebellion of the 2nd century B.C. It was established to protest the Greek-Syrian Kingdom, which tried to imitate its culture and decorated the Jewish Temple of Jerusalem with statues representing Greek gods.
Because a single vial oil that was enough for one day burned miraculously for eight, the holiday is eight-days long. It runs this year from November 28 to December 6.
Many Jews see the holiday as a symbol of victory over evil.
