Just before Christmas, the quarantine period for Covid-19-positive people in England was cut from 10 to 7. 

Business leaders and MPs call for the Prime Minister’s to do more amid concerns that the surge in case numbers and seven-day rule might disrupt crucial infrastructure due to spiked staff absenteeisms. 

Late on Monday, American health officials announced they would cut their isolation time for positive cases to just five days – provided people are showing no symptoms. 

Greece now follows a similar approach. The latest Foreign Office travel advice for Greece says: “If you are positive for COVID-19 in Greece, you will need to self-isolate within 5 days of receiving the result.

The latest Foreign Office travel advice regarding Greece says: “If you are positive for COVID-19 in Greece, you will need to self-isolate within 5 days of receiving the test results.” On December 30, the Athens Academy located in central Athens was pictured.

If you don’t feel the symptoms anymore, self-isolation can be ended after five days. 

Politico received a statement from a top official in Greece’s government: “This will also help relieve possible pressure on the public service sector in the next days due to the greater number of infectious diseases.”

Johnson and his ministers resist the current clamour for a further reduction in quarantine.

The UK Government has said there are ‘no further changes’ planned on reducing self-isolation but the rules will be kept ‘under review’. 

New data published today by NHS England showed the number of NHS hospital staff absent due to Covid-19 has nearly doubled since the start of the month. 

24632 NHS staff were infected with the coronavirus on Boxing Day. This was 31% more than the 18,829 that week and close to double the 12,508 at month’s beginning.

According to Office for National Statistics, 2.3 million people had Covid-19 last week in England. This is up from the 1.4 million in December 16th.  

The ONS has published the highest level of infection since Autumn 2020, when the series began. 

There are growing concerns that coronavirus-infected workers will be forced to remain at home for 7 days due to the rising number of cases.
