Britain’s worst boss who bullied staff and refused to pay their wages while boasting about his wealth has been ordered to pay £90,000 or face an extra 12 months in prison.
John Gaines, aged 74, is currently being held on fraud charges. Gaines swindled workers, after winning lucrative contracts, and defrauded security agents who worked at Heathrow Airport.
Gaines threatened his employees with the sack and racist abuse if they complained that they were not getting paid. A court heard.
He was prosecuted by the industry regulator Security Industry Authority.
Gaines was sent to prison for 4 years and 8 months in 2019, after being found guilty at Warwick Crown Court of 22 fraud convictions.
And he was back in court on Friday for a Proceeds of Crime Act hearing. He was ordered to have assets worth £91,934 confiscated, with £58,140 of it being used to pay compensation to those he cheated.
Refusing to comply, he may be sent back to prison for another year.

Gaines employed Security Industry Authority security guards at a variety of locations, including Tesco construction sites and Heathrow Airport.
He defrauded 21 employees out of wages totalling £58,140 on contracts which won him around £500,000.
Gaines went on boasting about his purchase of the house belonging to a Leeds United football player.
Gaines had seven companies that he ran under four names to make it seem larger.

Gaines of Leamington Spa (Warwickshire) was in court again Friday to face a Proceeds of Crime Act hearing.
He was ordered to have assets worth £91,934 confiscated, with £58,140 of it being used to pay compensation to those he cheated.
He will be sentenced to a year in prison if he does not pay within the three-month period.

Judge Anthony Potter told him that the frauds had been committed over a nearly four year period and stretched from Cheshire, the north, to Heathrow, the south.
“This was the exploitation and profit-making of vulnerable persons. No one provided your employees with any sort of uniform or proper contract.
‘All of this is against the background of bank accounts you held over this period of time being credited with something just over £500,000.
So, you didn’t have to be a poor man in this period of time.
Staff raised questions about payment and were threatened with the sack. Those from ethnic minority groups received racial abuse.
“I believe that your expressions of regret are not real remorse but a sense of sorrow for the impact the offense has had on you life.”
Anthony Potter, Judge, heard that Gaines didn’t provide proper equipment or contracts for staff.
Gaines, who had fired his barrister during the 2019 trial, was made to defend his actions.
Anne-Marie Critchley, the defending party, stated that Friday’s statement was “he now feels some regret.”
