The Duchess of Cornwall will play a leading part in celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next year, in a sign of her rising role within the Royal Family.

Camilla will preside over the ‘Big Lunch’, where thousands of groups of families and friends get together for street parties to mark 70 years of the Her Majesty’s reign.

Elizabeth II will become the longest-reigning monarch of British history on February 6th. The lunch will take place as part of the long weekend bank holiday celebrations planned for June.

The Queen is 95 and has been taking on fewer duties. Prince Charles, his wife, and Princess Anne are being asked to lead areas that would otherwise fall under the control of the head.

A Palace source said: ‘This is part of a range of events taking place but it means Camilla will have a central role in leading the nation in the celebrations in a sign of her growing responsibilities.’

With a raised public profile, Camilla also has a new hairdresser, has started wearing a Fitbit exercise watch to keep in shape and gave an interview to ITV Racing yesterday at Ascot as she takes on the Queen’s role of championing the monarch’s favourite sport.

Camilla, patron of Ebony Horse Club that teaches inner city children how to ride in Brixton on horseback, invited young riders to join her for a VIP tour.

She wore a bespoke tweed and velvet coat with matching skirt designed by couturier Roy Allen, wool and faux fur-trimmed hat by Lock & Co, and a silk zip-front blouse from the fashionable high street Me&Em brand, accessorised with a £3,700 Fendi Peekaboo handbag.

She said the young people helped by the charity gave her ‘huge pride’, adding: ‘I hope that there are going to be some budding jockeys in future.’

This is after an exhausting tour of Jordan and Egypt. She said her favourite spot in Jordan was where Christ was baptised.

Speaking to journalists after the tour, she said: ‘It was extraordinary, something you read about. You can actually see it and feel it. It was really quite spiritual.’

Charles and Camilla participated in over 30 engagements during the tour. Camilla was able to solo engage in Cairo and Amman’s most disadvantaged areas.

A Palace source said last night: ‘The Duchess is increasingly comfortable in the role and confident doing the job. She knows very well what it involves.’

It was designed to increase Brand Britain’s visibility on the global stage, post Brexit and post-Covid. Charles’ engagements were focused on interfaith relations and climate change. Camilla’s involvement, however, looked more like a presidential campaign than a Royal tour.

Charm offensive proved persuasive and had an impact on foreign Royals as well as dignitaries. A source close to the Duchess said: ‘This is about showing the world what the Royal Family can do. Camilla is building up years of work in the Middle East, which is vital for Britain and the world.’

How she keeps fit and able to perform at her job

Camilla started wearing a Fitbit watch for exercise to help her stay in good shape while she works on increasing work load.

Last week Charles and the Duchess visited Egypt, Jordan and were spotted with the device that tracks movements.

Camilla revealed previously how she kept fit while locked down by dancing with other over-50s (the Silver Swans).

She has also said she does a ‘bit’ of yoga and Pilates.
