A new report claims that David Beckham will be eligible for a knighthood once his finances are in order.

The Sun claims that the former footballer, 46, has been formally nominated and moved to the official recommendations list for next June.

Beckham thought he was close to becoming Sir David on the New Year’s Honours lists in 2014. But a HM Revenue and Customs warning sank his nomination.

Beckham’s participation in an alleged tax-evasion scheme has scuppered all his hopes.

Former footballer was among dozens of celebrities that invested in Ingenious Media to finance movies and lower investors’ tax liabilities. HMRC labeled the scheme as a tax avoidance tool.

But a source has now told the publication: ‘David, like many of the celebs embroiled with Ingenious, had no knowledge of what was going on at the time.

“His team approached HMRC for the first time almost two years before David became independent. Then, they finally settled it, one and all.

“In 2013, David was informed that the reason he wasn’t eligible for a knighthood is because of his tax scandal. He should be honoured now that it has been clarified.

‘He would obviously be utterly thrilled with a knighthood — but is under no illusions and will only believe it when he sees it.’

MailOnline has reached out to David for comments.

After his twenty-year career as a football player for England and Manchester United, he was widely believed to have been knighted.

He was also a major player in the London 2012 Olympics.

According to a source familiar with the Honours Committee, the Mail received the following statement in 2014. HMRC does a risk assessment of people. It’s well-known. Beckham’s returned with a red flag.

“There were several attempts to resolve it, as everyone felt that he deserved a knighthood. The tax was the only factor.

“We tried several informal ways to resolve the problem. We have rules. One is to not give it to red flagged people. It’s all about helping people to understand the issue of tax and improving their position. [of their taxes].

‘With Beckham, it could have been resolved – but I can see it is going to be much more awkward now.’

The Inland Revenue issues a red warning to anyone with financial irregularities. This includes a ban on honours recognition.

After passing a series of checks, he was reportedly upgraded to “green” status.

Admiring the bravery of Beckham in lifting the red warning, the Moore family praised them.

A Sunday Times report in 2019 revealed that David and Victoria are among the most high-taxed people in Britain.

They claimed the Inter Miami owner and the former Spice Girl paid £12.7m in tax over the course of a 12-month period.

Robert Watts who compiles The Sunday Times Rich List as well as the Tax List said that at the time ‘There is a suspicion that Beckham was involved in schemes to invest money under attack from the taxman.

The disclosure of the amount of tax that they have to pay could increase our chances of seeing Lady Posh and Sir Golden Balls one day.

“These numbers arguably argue for the wealthier more effectively than any charitable foundations or other forms of philanthropy.

‘The Tax List also raises the question of how our country fills the gap if Brexit – or a more hostile political environment – encourages the super-rich to quit the UK for Monaco, Switzerland or other low-tax bolt holes.’

After it was claimed that David had criticized Katherine Jenkins in an email to his PR manager for not being awarded an OBE, he lamented not having been granted a knighthood through leaked emails from 2017.

The Sun later reported that the Welsh singer said she was disappointed to hear the remarks made by former footballer, despite the fact his team vigorously denied all allegations.

Katherine spoke out about David’s comments towards Katherine and said that she had no other reason than to be proud of her accomplishments.

In 2014, the opera singer was given an OBE for her services to charity and travels to war zones in order to entertain troops.

David had made the comments and then she admitted to her stardom that she hadn’t offered any apology.

MailOnline was not able to reach David Beckham’s representative at that time.

An email purportedly stated that Katrine Jenkins OBE had sent it. Singing, going to see troops and drinking coke. F****** joke.’

His stance on the Scottish referendum, and his investment in loss-making businesses to lower his tax bill were also implicated in his hack emails.

Beckham’s representatives denied the claims, saying that the emails were stolen from a private email account.

David Beckham spokesperson said that the story was based upon outdated information taken from context by hacked private email accounts from third-party servers. This gives an intentionally inaccurate picture.

Katherine and David had been at odds for years. Katherine took to Twitter to dispute her affair with David in 2012. This decision left David furious.
