Ncuti Gatta will replace Jodie Whittaker in Doctor Who’s Time Lord role, according to the BBC.

After Whittaker’s announcement last July that she would be leaving her role, the 29-year old will take the title of 14th Doctor.

Gatwa was the first actor of color to assume the lead role of The Doctor during the series’ history. Jodie is also the first permanent female Doctor.

New guard: Ncuti Gatwa will take over from Jodie Whittaker as the Time Lord in Doctor Who, the BBC has announced

Jo Martin was the Time Lord’s first black version. Future of the Judoon was shown as Ruth Clayton in the January 2020 episode. But, Gatwa became the first ever black Doctor to serve as the series’ lead.

Gatwa is a Scottish actor who was born and raised in Rwanda. He starred in the Netflix series Sex Education, a highly popular Netflix show about Otis, a socially awkward teenager, and Jean, his sex therapist mother (Gillian Anderson).

Whittaker became the Tardis’ first female Doctor in 2017, taking over from the Tardis.

The BBC has previously stated that Davies was the one responsible for Doctor Who’s revival of 2005.

Davies and Gatwa shared the teaser on Instagram. A post featured two heart emoticons, an plus symbol, and a bluesquare.

Gatwa spoke out about his role and said that he felt ‘deeply honored’ and was ‘beyond thrilled’. However, he admitted that he was also scared to be part of the franchise.

According to him, the BBC said that the role meant so much to many people around the globe, which includes me. Each of my talented predecessors handled the unique privilege and responsibility with the greatest care.

“I will try my best to accomplish the same.”

Davies stated that Gatwa was ‘dazzled” during his audition. He added: “Sometimes talent walks through my door and it’s so bright, bold, and brilliant, and I just stand back and be awestruck and thank all of my lucky stars.

Whittaker’s replacement by Gatwa marks the BBC’s first black permanent doctor. Jo Martin, however, starred in Future of the Judoon as Ruth Clayton in January 2020.

Jodi met an unknown past version in this episode, as Jo.

It was a significant milestone for the series, as it marked the second female appearance on the extraterrestrial time traveler and the first black portrayal of the character.

Some fans weren’t sure whether or not Martin’s appearance meant what it implied – but show boss Chris Chibnall confirmed that this wasn’t ‘a trick’.

He told The Mirror: ‘The important thing to say is – she is definitively The Doctor. There are no tricks, nor is there a parallel universe. Jo Martin is The Doctor.

Chibnall observed that Top Boy was not credited the same as John Hurt for his appearance in an unimagined role in The Day Of The Doctor’s 50th Anniversary special in 2013.

“That’s the reason we gave her credit at the ending which all new Doctors receive the first time they meet them. Chibnall clarified that John Hurt received this credit.

In the beginning, Ruth Clayton was a tour guide who introduced the character. She pressed the In Case Of Emergency button after Judoons invaded her town.

It’s unclear where she fits in the mythology of previous Doctors – with many noting she did not recognise Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver, suggesting she came between Patrick Troughton’s Second Doctor and Jon Pertwee’s Third.

“There will be some answers to these mysteries in this series. As with Doctor Who, new questions are often revealed by answers. Chibnall assures that this is all deliberate.

Martin also said that Martin didn’t know she auditioned to be The Doctor, when she met with the producers to read for her.
