The race to Christmas No.1: Ed Sheeran and Elton John battle against ABBA, Adele and Gary Barlow & Sheridan Smith to bag the top spot










Elton John, Ed Sheeran, and Adele will face off to defeat Gary Barlow and Sheridan Smith in a battle for Christmas number 1. 

For the past three years the spot has gone to comedic act LadBaby – also known as Mark Hoyle –  but a slew of other artists are in the run to take the top spot. 

This year’s Christmas Eve release will see the release of this coveted title. In the weeks ahead, new singles and renowned names will compete for it.

Since Ed mentioned the song earlier in the year, it has been consistently ranked number one.

Adele is making a comeback and will be competing with other contenders this year. 

Official Charts reports that The Lathums released their Christmas version with Krampus (an anti-festive song), which could also be number one.

Craig Revel Horwood, Rietta and their Strictly friend have just released the cheerful It’s Christmas. Merry Christmas! They are being recognized for their contributions to festive music, while George Ezra covered Charles Brown’s “Come On Home For Christmas”. 

Newcomers such as Olivia Dean have also put themselves forward, as she releases her cover of The Christmas Song, originally sung by Nat King Cole.  

Mariah Carey released All I Want For Christmas is You in 1994. It should still be in contention. Last year the song held the number 18 spot, but it was beaten by LadBaby’s “Don’t Stop me Eatin” on the final day.

Coral reports that Elton (and Ed) have been cut to evens at the bookie desk (from 6 to 5) According to Coral, the duo are just LadBaby behind them in betting at 5-6 Friday. 

Other odds include 8-1 Adele, 16-1 ABBA, and 20-1 any other track.
