The US Open champion suffered a shock three-set defeat to lowly-ranked Montenegrin Danka Kovinic in the second round of the Australian Open last month

In the second round at the Australian Open, the US Open Champion was stunned to lose in three sets to Montenegrin Danka Kvinic, who is lowly ranked.

It was the first defeat for the 19 year-old in a match completed at a grand tennis tournament. Ajla Tomljanovic suffered a similar loss four years ago.

Kovinic was able to fight back after rattling through three of the initial games. Soon, it became obvious that Raducanu wasn’t happy.

After playing five more games she called the trainer. She then took an extended medical leave to treat her right hand.

Kovinic led 5-3 after the 17th seed was evidently hampered by her forehand. Raducanu then broke serve, but the Montenegrin won the set.

Although the Montenegrin appeared to have a good grip in the second set, she broke at 4-4. Raducanu however, who looked to enjoy the challenge, broke again for 4-4 and was able to complete the set.

It was obvious that the blister was bothering her, and Kovinic was in a position to overcome her problems during the final and third sets.

Emma further cemented her place as a household name as she was revealed as she face of Sports Direct's 2021 Christmas campaign earlier this month
