A factory worker who almost missed out on buying his winning National Lottery scratch card because of roadworks outside the shop told his boss he would not be at work ‘ever again’ after he scooped £2million.
Ian Black, aged 61, was on his way home after working a night shift in the Pirelli factory, Carlisle (Cumbbria). He decided to make a stop at a nearby shop. Buy a newspaper
A father-of-5 almost refused to leave the shop. because of roadworks outside the store but he instead decided to persevere and stick with his original plan.
After reaching the shop, Mr. Black He tried his luck with a Monopoly Deluxe scratchcard, which caught his interest.

Because of the roadworks, Mr Black claimed that he nearly missed his chance to purchase his National Lottery scratchcard.

The Blacks, who are parents to five children and 10 grandchildren respectively, want to purchase a piece of land out in the country.
After the factory worker found out he was winning, he raced home to tell Sandra (55), that he wanted to check on something.
According to Mr Black: “I don’t believe I’ve seen as many zeros.” I kept questioning, is this really £2m?
“I phoned my employer immediately to inform them that I wasn’t going to be available on the day. They also informed me that they don’t expect me to be present this week.
“My boss was understandably shocked. He just stated, Why, What an Earth has Happened?”
It was the moment that I couldn’t help but exclaim, “I won the National Lottery!” This is one of my most memorable moments.
“Never had I believed I’d ever be able to say that.” It’s something you always wish for, but people like Sandra or I don’t get it. But now Sandra and we have proof that it happens. =
At the top of the couple’s shopping list is an operation for their Labrador/Staffordshire bull terrier cross Meg to have the bones of her leg fused together.
A plot of land is also available for them to construct their dream house.
They have 10 grandchildren and five children.
Mr Black said of the winning ticket: ‘It’s not just life-changing for us, it’s life-changing for the whole family.
They’ll each get a treat. I will also get some advice to help me make money with it.

They also said that they plan to assist their grandchildren and children in getting on the property ladder.

According to Mr Black, he called work and informed his boss that he wouldn’t be there ‘this week’ or ‘ever again’.

“Something just told me to get it.
“I went outside the shop to scratch it. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Then I screamed and drove off to my home.
“As soon as I got into my house, I started shouting at Sandra to go down the stairs. Her immediate reaction was to think that something had occurred to the dog.
‘I said ”no, we have won £2m”.
She thought the joke was funny, but she then looked at it and almost fainted. Sandra went white.
“To think that I nearly didn’t get to the shop because of roadworks.
“It was almost like driving by.”
The Monopoly Deluxe scratch card was purchased by Mr Black. It has a 1.38 chance to win a prize, operators claim. Prizes range from £5 up to the top prize of £2m.
Black stated that he felt overwhelmed by the situation and believed the news was still being received.
Sandra and I are so excited to finally live the life we dreamed and enjoy the best of retirement. It is such a beautiful moment in our lives.
