Although the return of the popular drama was hailed the biggest TV event of the year, the fashion industry is seeing its Succession moment in reality.   

In keeping with the theme, Zara’s Zara heiress Marta Ortega Perez has been appointed chairman of Inditex. She follows Amancio Ortega.

Marta, who is the only child of Inditex founder Amancio and his second wife Flora Perez, takes over in April at the world’s largest fashion group, which has 6,654 shops and 162,450 staff. 

She has been groomed for the role from a young age, having started out aged 22 as a sales associate at the Zara store on King’s Road in London and going on to work for the £75billion company ever since. 

This 37-year old mother-of-2 will lead the parent company that owns a range of high-end brands such as Zara, Massimo Dutti and Stradivarius. 

Pablo Isla was the chairman of Amancio’s board for more than a decade.

Marta has overthrown two other older women siblings from her father’s first marriage to Rosalía Mera Goyenechea, with whom he founded Zara in 1975, for the role. 

Her brother Marcos, 50, was born with cerebral palsy, while her sister Sandra, 53,  became Spain’s richest woman when she inherited her mother’s seven per cent stake in Inditex in 2013.

She now spends her time working with the foundation her mother founded for those with mental and physical disabilities, Fundación Paideia Galiza. 

In the meantime Marta attended a Swiss board school and then studied business management in London at the European Business School.

Zara on Oxford Street was her training place, and Kate Moss, who modeled there, apparently rebuffed all of her attempts to be friendly. 

She spoke to Wall Street Journal in January and stated that she thought it was impossible to survive the first week. Then you get addicted to it.

She has since gone on to hold an undefined yet integral role in her father’s company, in which she ‘oversaw Zara womenswear design and merchandising’.

Zara’s decisions included putting Zara stores in streets where there are few designer boutiques, and hiring celebrities like Steven Meisel or Mario Sorrenti to photograph models.

She also managed Zara’s high-end line of SRPLS and her collaboration with KASSL Editions. 

Marta was credited with helping to strengthen the company’s brand and its clothes range. 

Similar to Amancio, she works on Zara’s main floor. La Coruña to ‘stay close to the product’.

She wore four Valentino couture creations, which were flown in via private jet and delivered by Pierpaolo Piccioli, the label’s creative director. 

Guests enjoyed performances by Norah Jones, Jamie Cullum and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, while the event was all captured by the late fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh.

She is a mother-of-two, with one-year-old daughter Matilda and  Amancio, eight, who is a son with her previous husband, Olympic showjumper Sergio Alvarez Moya, who she married in 2012.

Meanwhile she is also close friends of the couple include Queen Letizia of Spain, who regularly steps out in pieces from the brand. 

The decision to take on the top job comes after she claimed earlier this summer she had no plans to take a more formal leadership role.    

A source told The Telegraph: ‘She’s very calm and polite.’

The insider added that Marta will leave much of the day-to-day to incoming CEO, Oscar Garcia Maceiras.

They said: ‘We can expect a natural evolution of what she does now – she has no desire to rock the boat. 

‘Her big thing is the product; she brings the consumer perspective.’

Speaking about taking on the role, Marta said: ‘I have lived and breathed this company since my childhood, and I have learned from all the great professionals I have worked with over the last 15 years.

“I’ve always stated that my goal is to build upon the legacy of my parents, look to the future, but also learn from the past, and serve the shareholders, customers, and company where they are most need. It is a great honor to have been trusted with my future.

She was promoted as part of a larger shake-up which unnerved investors, sending shares down by 6 percent in Madrid. 

Pablo Isla served as the deputy chairman, chief executive and then became executive chairman between 2005 and 2011. He was first to be appointed outside of the Ortega clan to run the business.

Isla, who is 57, stated that “We believe it’s time to start anew.”

Maceiras, general counsel and board secretary was promoted to the position of chief executive. 

Carlos Crespo was in office since July 2019. The 46-yearold Carlos Crespo will now be the chief operating officer.

Inditex is majority-owned by Amancio Ortega, Spain’s richest man, who has a 59.3 per cent stake worth £44.5billion.

Zara was founded by him and Rosalia (now 85) in Spain’s Galicia region in 1975.

It has grown into an empire with annual sales worth £17.5billion across eight brands including Massimo Dutti, Pull&Bear and Stradivarius. It has over 100 stores in the UK, including 66 Zara shops. 

Profits soared to £726million in the three months to July as online sales rose and shops remained open in key markets. It may just £940million across the whole of last year as Covid took its toll.

Inditex shares in Madrid fell by nearly 8 percent this year.

Retail Reflections Analyst Andrew Busby stated that it was a good succession plan and there are no hiccups. 

“She’s a trusted partner and the brand will keep growing, evolving and succeeding,” said Cathy.

It is, in terms its offering and how it manages stock inventory, one of only a few successful stories that we currently have on High Street. This is probably why it’s the envy of so many of its competition. It just requires a smooth handover.

However, analysts from Spanish investment firm Alantra claimed that they would prefer a smoother and orderlier transition. Isla will be in charge of the non-executive leadership.

Kepler experts warned Ortega Perez, Maceiras and others that they ‘have much to prove’ when it comes down to running this huge monster in the middle the Covid crises.
