After car crashes onto busy motorway bridge, a female passenger fights for her life. The driver has been charged with driving the car while it is banned.

Following the death of a woman who was in critical condition after her car crashed from a bridge onto a busy highway, a man has been arrested for causing serious injury.

Durham Police reported that Hugh Raymond Holmes from Spennymoor was accused of several motoring infractions after a collision at Bowburn interchange on A1(M) on Friday at 10.35am.

Additionally, the 32-year old is charged with driving while uninsured, disqualifying from driving and failing to submit a sample of breath.

The incident occurred when a car was on the A177 flyover and it landed on its roof at the reservation’s central reservation.

Although the driver was able to free themselves from the wreckage of their car, the female passenger in her mid-40s had to be cut and flown to hospital with’serious injuries. Her condition is critical.

North East Ambulance Service stated that it had requested assistance from Great North Air Ambulance. The Great North Air Ambulance was able to transport two patients to the hospital.

Durham Constabulary detective constable Natalie Horner stated that on Sunday she thanked the public for their patience and support as they dealt with this matter.

It was near the site of an horrific fireball collision that left three victims dead in July. Ion Onut, a 41-year-old lorry driver, was arrested earlier this month on three counts each of causing death through dangerous driving.

Holmes was placed in custody. She will now appear before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates Court Monday.
