After mountains of trash caught fire late last night, a major fire broke out at the Wiltshire recycling center.
Firefighters are on the ground tackling flames following an emergency call at Devizes (Wiltshire) just before midnight on Wednesday.
The incident was still being fought by firefighters this morning.
Because of the smoke in the vicinity, residents near by were asked to close their windows.
The spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service stated that the initial crews arrived to find 200-300 tons of residual waste. They used two main jets, in order not to escalate the situation.
The staff on site assisted with the loading of shovel machinery, creating fire breaks in the waste pile. They also worked closely with firefighters to control the flames.
“As of 6am this morning, the incident was reduced to 1 fire engine + 1 water carrier. We will be on-scene for several days to keep an eye on it.
Group Manager Richard Coleman added: ‘We are advising local residents to keep doors and windows closed due to the smoke in the area.
“As this fire is expected to continue for some days, we will notify the public of any concerns about the smoke if they occur.”
According to the fire department, though it is currently under investigation, the fire was believed to have been started by accident. However, it is possible that no cause has ever been established.
Dozens upon dozens of firefighters have rushed to tackle the flames following being summoned near Devizes in Wiltshire shortly before midnight. (Pictured, Recycling Centre in Stert in Wiltshire in flames on Wednesday night)
