The 2022 Golden Globes is going ahead on Sunday without an audience, celebrities or red carpet after stars including Scarlett Johansson called for a boycott of the ceremony due to the lack of diversity on the HFPA panel.

The ceremony will also not be televised nationally for the first time since the writers strike in 2008.

On Tuesday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association stated that the winners for the 79th Golden Globe Awards would still be announced live at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 9, 6PM PST.

There is no information available about whether the livestream will be made public, or if winners will just be posted on social media.

Golden Globes loses its shine: Sunday's awards will have NO celebrities, audience or red carpet and televised ceremony is AXED - after stars called for a boycott

Golden Globes has lost its sparkle: Sunday’s ceremony won’t feature any stars, audience members or red carpet. The televised event is cancelled – star calls for boycott

In addition to revealing winners, the awards will shine alight on the long-established philanthropy efforts of the HFPA by showcasing a wide range of grantees’, according to a statement published on the Golden Globes Website.

The announcement added: ‘Over the past 25 years, the HFPA has donated $50 million to more than 70 entertainment-related charities, film restoration, scholarship programs and humanitarian efforts; incredibly impactful organizations, many of whom were hit hard over the last two years as a result of the pandemic.’

After backlash from the HFPA over its inability to be inclusive and diversity, the show won’t air on NBC. The organization stated that they want the event to highlight the progress they have made in this area.

The announcement added that Kyle Bowser, Senior Vice President of the NAACP Hollywood Bureau, ‘will further discuss the “Reimagine Coalition,” a joint five-year initiative to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion across the global entertainment industry.’

“Each year, the HFPA Hollywood Bureau, and the NAACP Hollywood Bureau, will collaborate on funding and supporting a series of groundbreaking initiatives with the overall goal of ensuring visibility from projects by artists of diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds; increasing diversity in the industry; building pathways for inclusion for young artists, journalists, and others of color,” the announcement read.

Only’selected members and grantes’ are allowed into the venue. They must show proof that they have received full vaccinations, booster shots and an in-depth COVID-19 test.

All guests must be’masked’ and socially distant while in the ballroom. There will not be a red carpet or acceptance of media credentials for this event.

The HFPA said that 21 journalists were added to the class, each of which was first time Golden Globe voters, as a result of their’sweeping top-to-bottom changes’

It was also revealed Tuesday by Variety that the Globes’ talent booker reached out to several publicity agencies about getting celebrity presenters, but no celebs agreed to take part.

Helen Hoehne of HFPA addressed the scandal ahead of the announcement of the nominations. We have also 21 new members, the largest number and most varied in our history.

Focus Features’ Belfast, and Netflix’s The Power of the Dog tied for the most nominations in film with seven each.

HBO’s Succession has five nominations for Best TV Series-Drama.

Guests

NBC announced in May it wouldn’t air the 2022 Golden Globe Awards in January. Criticism of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was so strong that Tom Cruise returned all three of his awards.

Star won the Best Actor Golden Globes award for Jerry Maguire’s role in Magnolia, 1990.

Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, and Scarlett Johansson led the calls for a boycott at the Golden Globes. Scarlett stated that she faced sexist comments and questions by certain HFPA member’s that were bordering on sexual harassment.

In a statement, she stated that as an actor in promotion of a film one should attend awards ceremonies as well as press conferences.

‘In the past, it has meant having to face sexist comments and questions by some HFPA member that were bordering on sexual harassment. This is exactly why I refused to attend their conferences for so many years.

She said, “Unless there are necessary fundamental reforms within the organization,” and she continued: “I believe it’s time to take a look back at the HFPA in order to focus on the strength and importance of unity within our industry and unions.”

After it became clear that 90 of the HFPA members were not black, they came under attack.

The HFPA nominated nine persons of colour in acting and directing categories, the same as 2021.

The Golden Globes’ history of ignoring black- or minority-led television shows and films has also been widely criticized.

Oops: The Golden Globe nominations were announced last month by Snoop Dogg who put his own unique spin on the pronunciation of acclaimed actors' names

Oops, the Golden Globe nominees were revealed last month by Snoopdogg. He put his own spin on how actors are named.

In March of this year, Philip Berk, the former president, was fired for sending an email calling Black Lives Matter a hate movement’. Two consultants who were hired by the HFPA to help with diversity problems quit because there wasn’t enough progress.

There was also a claim that the HFPA wasn’t inclusive enough to LGBTQ members or women.

Both Netflix and Amazon Studios said that they will cut ties to the HFPA if it doesn’t make more dramatic changes quickly.

‘We don´t believe these proposed new policies – particularly around the size and speed of membership growth – will tackle the HFPA´s systemic diversity and inclusion challenges, or the lack of clear standards for how your members should operate,’ Netflix co-chief executive Ted Sarandos wrote in a letter to the group.

Boycott: Tom Cruise was among stars calling for a boycott of the 2022 Golden Globes due to the lack of diversity on the HFPA panel

Boycott: Mark Ruffalo also voiced his disdain

WarnerMedia announced that they would no longer hold screenings or other events in support of the HFPA unless it makes more substantive changes.

WarnerMedia executive wrote in an open letter that they had received complaints about requests for favors, perks, and inappropriate demands from our employees and others within the industry. “We are sorry that this has happened, as an industry. However, it was largely accepted until now.”

NBC released a statement saying that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has its support and is working towards reform. However, NBC stated in a statement that change cannot be made fast enough to ensure next year’s Globes.

The network stated that a change of such magnitude requires time and effort. They also felt strongly about the need for the HFPA to take the necessary time to make it work. NBC won’t air the Golden Globes 2022. We are optimistic that NBC will air the show in January 2023 if the company follows through with its plans.
