Huw Edwards shares his battle with depression over 20 years that left him bedbound.
The Welsh journalist, 60, who has fronted BBC News At Ten for 18 years, admitted the problems began in 2002- the year before he took his presenting stint for the corporation’s flagship news broadcast.
In a documentary in Welsh celebrating his career, the newsreader stated that he was ‘bedridden by mental illness’ and “didn’t want work”.

“People believe that being confident will make it easier to doubt oneself. It’s false. As with all people who suffer from depression, it doesn’t happen in one instance. He explained that it comes and goes.
Bridgend’s native man recalled vividly when he was able to ‘go down pretty quickly’.
He stated in detail, “For me, it began around 2002. The process was quite fast and difficult to comprehend. I was hesitant to talk to anyone.

“Maybe it was because I wasn’t satisfied at work. The overwhelming feeling was hard to describe. “I had some anxiety and had never seen that kind of fear before.”
Not only was his work situation a problem, but he also had to face the reality of how he would present himself publicly as “you are a famous person”.
‘Whenever I had to go live on air, I would literally have to tell myself, “Come on now, you’ll be OK now. It’s not hard to do. He said that I needed to keep pushing myself.

Since joining the BBC in 1984 as a trainee news reporter, Huw has had many presenting roles.
Highlights of his 37-year-career include: presenting BBC Six O’Clock News for just under four years, covering major royal events such as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and Prince Philip’s funeral – and stepping up as lead presenter for the 2019 general election coverage on 12 and 13 December.
