It comes as news emerged more than one million women have missed out on breast cancer screening as a result of the pandemic.

Breast Cancer Now released an analysis yesterday that found around 12,000 people are likely to have undiagnosed breast cancer.

It was discovered that 1,480,000 women had been waiting for mammograms after national breast screening was stopped in March 2013.

Women aged 50-71 years old are eligible for the scans every three years. They prevent around 1,300 deaths each year and detect 19,000 cases per year.

The service was then suspended for 4 months, which meant that a million more women were able to take tests.

The backlog is still growing by half of a million, even though screening resumed.

Due to staff shortages, and strict infection control protocols resulting from the pandemic, the service continues to operate at a lower level.
