Kate Middleton showed her respect for Princess Diana, her mother-in-law by wearing a festive outfit as she hosted her Christmas Carol concert.

The Duchess of Cambridge, 39, sported a festive red £1,350 cardigan with a white collar from Miu Miu as she appeared in the first trailer for Royal Carols – Together At Christmas.

The look was remarkably likened to that of the Princess Of Wales’ ‘black sheep sweater’ with its vivid scarlet color, white polkadot pattern, and white collar.

Diana, the late, wore the Knit, designed by Joanna Osborne and Sally Muir’s Warm and Wonderful at Smith’s Lawn in Windsor in 1981 and again in 1983.

New photos of the Duchess were released today ahead of the Westminster Abbey concert. It will air on Christmas Eve, ITV.

Her hair was tangled in soft, bronze waves. The Royal opted to wear a natural look for the concert. She looked thrilled as she sat at the abbey where Prince William and she were married in 2011.

The red knit has a Peter Pan collar with super soft cashmere.

It also features a distinct white-black pattern on the bodice.

Kate's look echoed a style worn by Lady Diana Spencer, who donned a similar patterned jumper to attend several events in the 1980s

The playful knit — featuring rows of white sheep and a single black sheep on a red background — caused quite a stir when the royal bride-to-be, newly engaged to Prince Charles, wore it with jeans to a polo match in the summer of 1981.

Diana’s jumper was apparently a gift from the mother of one of the princess’ page boys at her wedding to Prince Charles in 1981.

Many believe that Princess Diana’s famous “black sheep” jumper, which was often referred to as a joke, was an indication of her inner feelings about being outside the Royal family.

Even though her attire raised eyebrows in court, the incident caused more trouble at Joanna Osborne’s London knitting shop and Sally Muir’s small boutique, which was selling the humble design that would soon go global.

Sloane Ranger’s staple jumper, the jumper even made it into Penelope Keith’s wardrobe.

It was eventually discontinued by the designers and stopped being made in 1994.

However Princess Diana’s ‘black sheep’ jumper garnered attention again thanks to the fourth series of The Crown, which focused on the early romance between Prince Charles, played by Josh O’Connor, 30, and Diana, played by Emma Corrin, 24.

And as such, Warm & Wonderful released the jumper again which is available to pre-order for $295 (£250) on American fashion brand Rowing Blazers under the name of ‘women’s original “Diana” sheep sweater’.

Kate has a great eye for details and is often compared to Princess Diana in her fashion choices.

In September, mother-of-three Kate dazzled at the James Bond No Time to Die premiere in a custom Jenny Packham embellished gown – which is usually priced at £2,800. Featuring cape sleeve detailing and structured shoulders, she teamed her dress with bespoke £290 Onitaa earrings – which were made in Pakistan by the South Asian luxury couture label.

Kate’s dress was very similar to the one Princess Diana wore in 1985 to the premier of James Bond film A View to Kill.

In May, the Duchess sported a £59.99 Zara blazer and £95.00 pleated midi skirt by Hope Fashion in the colour of the Scottish flag which drew a striking similarity to a look the Princess of Wales donned nearly three decades ago for a day of royal duties in Nottingham.

The trailer for Kate’s carol service also shows celebrity performers including Leona Lewis, Ellie Goulding and Tom Walker. The trailer also includes a clip featuring Kate Garraway, the presenter of Kate’s carol service. This was recorded on December 8th.

BBC Studios Events Productions developed the service. The broadcast will take place on Christmas Eve on ITV, at 7.30pm.

According to reports, Prince William and Kate dropped the BBC from their Christmas special following the series The Princes and the Press. This was in response to criticisms by the Queen and Prince Charles, as well as the Duke and Duchess, for lending credibility for ‘overblown and unverified claims’ regarding the Royal Family.
