Innovative new design in Portsmouth, Hampshire features LED panels embedded on the roadway surface that illuminate as pedestrians move towards them.

The device was created to improve safety at zebra crossings by making pedestrians visible to passing drivers at night.

This innovative concept was created in Portsmouth, Hampshire. It features LED panels that are embedded in the road’s surface. The panel lights up as pedestrians approach it. 

If it proves to be successful, the new crossing will be closely monitored.  

Councillor Lynne Stapgg from Portsmouth City Council is the cabinet member responsible for traffic and transportation.

“We selected this crossing due to its popularity, especially at night. There are many nearby restaurants and bars. We want the crossing to be more easily visible so that more people can cross it safely.

The new crossing system will be monitored and the concept could be replicated across other parts of the city if it's successful

Monitoring of the crossing will take place and the idea could possibly be extended to other areas in the city, if successful. 

“We advise people to be visible to others. It’s an easy way of improving safety. The lighting at the crossing is one great example.

Colas was a road contractor who developed the lighting systems in conjunction with local authorities and Department of Transport.

Colas director of Asset Contracting, TIan Gibbons, stated that this was a unique trial in the UK. We look forward to sharing with others the results.
