A pride of Lionesses was upset by this lion and lost their testicle after he attacked them for taking food from their young.
Mandevo the Lion tried to take a kill of buffalo off the mothers but didn’t realise it was intended for the 11-strong family of cubs.
Mandevo sustained a severe bite to the genitals in the Maasai Kari fight. The vets were forced to have one of his testicles removed.
Gren Sowerby was able to capture the cat fight and raise alarm so that rangers could arrive to treat the animal.
Whitley Bay photographer, Tyne and Wear’s Mr. Sowerby regularly visits this area to capture the animals.
According to the 71-year old, “The roar was almost like an F1 car!” He laid down, and then licked his lips.
“We were shocked, but we have witnessed this behavior before. The damage done to him was obvious.
Mandevo could not have had urgent treatment if Sowerby and his crew hadn’t witnessed what occurred.
He said, “The rangers sent out a vet from the Nairobi Elephant Orphanage.
“He had surgery and is currently recovering in the wild, where they’ll monitor him.”

Gren Sowerby, aged 71, captured the action in Maasai Mara. This is in the southwest of Kenya.

During the fight that saw them pinning the lion to the ground, the lionesses got bloody around their faces.
