Due to the Covid epidemic that has swept through the Premier League, two Premier League Boxing Day matches have been delayed: Liverpool vs Leeds and Wolves against Watford. 

Omicron has hit the nation hard and teams have been devastated. Positive tests are coming in daily.

This week, Leeds and Watford were affected by the Premier League’s decision to postpone their Boxing Day matches against Liverpool and Wolves. Officials granted their request.

Following outbreaks in Claudio Ranieri’s and Marcelo Bielsa’s teams, the Premier League delayed Liverpool’s game against Leeds.

A Premier League statement read: ‘Following postponement requests from Leeds United and Watford FC as a result of COVID-19, the Premier League Board met this morning and regrettably agreed to call off the two affected clubs’ Boxing Day fixtures. 

The Wolverhampton Wanderers are playing Watford FC against Watford FC. Liverpool FC is facing Leeds United. Both games will be played Sunday at 12:30pm.

Leeds registered five cases positive, according to the club. They confirmed that all patients were symptomatic and that this is due to their high level of vaccine intake.

The decision comes after Premier League teams voted against a festive firebreak’ that would allow squads to recover after outbreaks. It angered some players who had been forced to play in the Christmas period.

This round saw around twice the number of positive tests, with 90 staff and players returning positive results. 

Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s boss, had advocated strongly for the footballing authorities in order to consider player welfare. Today saw clubs meet over Zoom to address this issue regarding Covid. 

Klopp will be pleased to hear that the Leeds match has been cancelled. This means that Klopp can now enjoy the time off he wanted.
