India has seen a man beheaded for trying to disrupt prayers at Sikhisms’ holiest shrine. This incident was captured on TV.   

According to local media, the man leapt over the railing and into the inner sanctuary of the Golden Temple during Saturday night prayers in Amritsar. 

A video taken inside the temple captures a man in blue clothing and yellow pagri jumping over the railing to enter the inner sanctum. He grabs a sword that is kept before the Guru Granth Sahib (the holy Sikh book).

Then, he is grabbed and violently dragged back by the worshippers. 

Separate video of the man sitting beside the prayer leader jumping to stop the attacker, shown on the left side of the shot as he jumps into the holy sanctum.

He is then grabbed by worshippers who violently drag him back over the railing and out of the inner sanctum

New Delhi Television was told by police that the victim had been killed in the attack and they are looking at CCTV footage for more details.

Parminder Singh, Amritsar’s deputy commissioner, said to the channel that the man had been wearing a yellow cap on his head. He then jumped over the fence. 

Charanjit Singh, the Punjab chief minister, condemned this man’s “most unfortunate and most heinous act” in a series tweets that he sent late Saturday from his office. 

Channi also directed a probe in order to determine the true motives and conspirators behind this heinous act.

Protecting the Guru Granth Sahib shrines and the Sikh shrines is an extremely sensitive matter for the community.
