Research suggests that there are many reasons why’retired Lego’ has seen a spike in value, including limited supply, scarcity of sets being resold, and even fewer being sold in good condition.

The study was conducted by experts who compared the prices for 2,322 Lego sets between 1987 and 2015.

Star Wars’ Millennium Falcon and Death Star II are the most costly, as well as models from the Cafe on the Corner or Taj Mahal. 

Research also revealed that Barbie dolls and mini-superhero figures or model cars are highly sought-after items by collectors.

Study by Russia’s Higher School of Economics University, (HSE), found Lego enthusiasts are the best investors because they have the ability to resell their products for high returns.

Victoria Dobrynskaya, HSE University, stated that Lego investors can generate large returns by reselling unpacked Lego sets. This is especially true for rare or limited-edition items.

‘Sets produced 20-30 years ago make Lego fans nostalgic and prices for them go through the roof.

“But despite high profits of Lego sets in the secondary market in general. Not all sets are equally successful. One must be a genuine Lego fan to understand the market nuances.

The prices for very large and small sets rise faster than those of medium-sized sets.

It is likely that small sets contain more unique or complex parts than large ones, which makes them attractive to older adults.

The most expensive ones include Star Wars' Millennium Falcon, Death Star II, and Imperial Star Destroyer, plus models of the Cafe on the Corner and Taj Mahal buildings

It is the secondary market that sees the most growth in the price of themes sets dedicated to iconic buildings, movies and seasonal holidays. 

A second category of sets is those that are limited in number or given at promotional events. This makes them more attractive to collectors.

After a survey showed that Lego’s toys are marketed towards boys, Lego pledged to end gender stereotyping.

Famous Danish company, which is the largest toymaker in the world, claims its products are used primarily by young boys.

However, it stated that they will work hard to eradicate gender bias in their toys and encourage products that target both genders.
