New York City’s crime rate continues to rise on all fronts, and it is expected to increase six percent by 2020. Two more alarming attacks occurred to further bolster those dire statistics.

Police released video Tuesday showing the aftermath of an attack in Northwest Brooklyn.

At 6:25 p.m. on Sunday the incident took place in the 8th Avenue and 45th Street areas.

A 41 year old woman was on her way with her two young children when she was approached by a man who pulled out a knife.

After a brief struggle, the man slashed at the woman’s stomach. As he fled the scene, he was captured climbing a barrier at a subway station.

The victim was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. He is currently in stable condition.

The NYPD also released video on Thursday of an assault on a man aged 75 in Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

The victim was transported to the local hospital to be treated for a laceration of his eye.

Overall crime in New York has risen by over six percent in 2021, but assaults like the ones that took place in Manhattan and Brooklyn are up nearly 10 percent

New York’s overall crime has increased by more than six percent since 2021. However, assaults such as those that occurred in Manhattan and Brooklyn have risen nearly 10 percent.

In New York City, overall crime increased 6.13 percent between 2020 and December 26, 2018.

This was 9.6 percent more than 2020, and is the most significant increase in felony attacks like those mentioned previously.

This year, murders (4.1%), shooting victims (0.6%), rapes (3.3%), and robberies (4.7%) all increased.

Incoming Mayor Eric Adams and new police chief Keechant Sewell will be tasked with harnessing the world’s largest police force to clean up New York City’s worsening crime problem under lame duck Bill de Blasio.

Dermot Shea from the NYPD, the Commissioner, will leave at the close of the month. Dermot blames the Democratic-dominated State Legislature for the increase in violent crime.

The New York State Legislature passed criminal justice reform legislation in early 2020. They were signed by Andrew Cuomo, then the Governor of New York.

New York Courts can release prisoners who are not eligible under the existing law. The rules of this new law have been subject to increased scrutiny.

Pretrial detention was abolished for large numbers of nonviolent felonies and low-level cases.

A court can also release someone under certain conditions according to the law, like a firearm or travel restriction.

Shea and other people have suggested that the new law was to blame for an increase in violent crime.

Defenders of the law claim that violence has increased throughout the country, even in areas that have not implemented any reforms to criminal justice.

In spite of the increase in crime, Mayor Bill de Blasio gave praise to Shea for his leadership at their monthly crime statistics press conference earlier in this month. De Blasio stated, “I believe the commissioner has much to be proud about.”

Shea was confirmed to his post in December 2019.

“I think the work is that [my executive team]Shea said that did served as the glue to hold the city together during one of its most difficult times.
