MPs have demanded Ladbrokes pay again £102million it claimed in furlough money after its on-line enterprise boomed within the pandemic.

The bookmakers, a part of FTSE100 big Entain, claimed the sum after lockdowns compelled it to close its 2,850 outlets.

However the pandemic prompted thousands and thousands to wager on-line, boosting bookmakers’ earnings.

Ladbrokes claimed £57.5million in 2020, in line with Corporations’ Home accounts, and £44million in 2021. 

Entain had earnings of £175million in 2020 from revenues of £3.6billion.

Betfred claimed between £46.6million and £65.5million from March 2020 and Might 2021.

Ms Harris said: 'Pandemic support was designed to help desperate firms survive ¿ not bolster the pockets of gambling fat cats. Ladbrokes and Betfred must follow the lead of industry rivals and pay back these enormous sums'

Ms Harris stated: ‘Pandemic help was designed to assist determined corporations survive – not bolster the pockets of playing fats cats. Ladbrokes and Betfred should comply with the lead of trade rivals and pay again these monumental sums’

Its earnings rose from £171million to £205million within the 12 months to September 2020. 

Labour MP Carolyn Harris stated: ‘Pandemic help was designed to assist determined corporations survive – not bolster the pockets of playing fats cats. 

Ladbrokes and Betfred should comply with the lead of trade rivals and pay again these monumental sums.’

Entain stated the scheme protected the roles of 14,000 workers and it was conserving funds ‘below evaluation’. 

Betfred stated due to the scheme ‘we now have not needed to make a single redundancy as a result of pandemic’.
