Controversy: The divisive sitcom, which has been both loved and maligned since its inception in 2011, is set to air two more episodes over the festive period
One wrote: @BBCOne must be severely short of quality programming over the festive season, not one but TWO Specials of @MrsBrownsBoys.
“By showing Mrs Browns Boys, you have already turned off many viewers that they are trying to lure back.”
One fan wrote, “Think I’d rather see this Christmas than Mrs Browns Boys,” while another tweeted: “Mrs Browns Boys” is the most unfunny TV program ever created. It is absolutely ridiculous nonsense that the BBC thinks is funny.
But viewers were quick enough to defend it, and one wrote: “Love Mrs Brown’s Boys. I hope they are better than the Halloween Special.”;
A second added comment: “Genuinely Love Mrs Browns Boys.”
The past history of Mrs Brown’s Boys was marred by controversy. Two actors quit during a dispute over pay.
At odds: Mrs Brown’s Boys is at the helm of BBC’s Christmas lineup, with another pair of specials featuring the Irish mammy’s hijinks, but news of its return has split viewers
According to reports, the actors involved – Gary Hollywood and Damien McKiernan, who are playing the roles of Dino and Rory respectively – discovered that they make less than most of the cast which is mostly made up stars Brendan O’Carroll’s families.
MailOnline was told by an insider last year that MailOnline is not happy with the manner in which the show’s production runs.
‘The show is very Upstairs/Downstairs, with a very clear divide between Brendan’s family and the few actual actors such as Gary and Damien,’ the insider said.
Drama: One of the shows’ cast members quit during a pay dispute, claiming that the show is ‘backstage political’.
‘The family are all directors of the Mrs Brown’s production company and are always looked after. Brendan can do what he likes at the BBC.
MailOnline reached out at that point to BBC for clarification.
As well as the dispute over money, Gary and Damien were allegedly told they were not going to feature in the 2020 Christmas specials.
Although he has not disclosed his salary from the show, O’Carroll’s net worth was last calculated in 2013 when it was an astounding £9.98 million / €11 million.
The show’s stars revealed their debt levels in 2017 and 2018. But in 2019 it was reported that profits at a Brendan O’Carroll entertainment company almost doubled to £584,311 / €643,876 the year before.
