The Commons Standards Committee concluded that five Conservatives including Natalie Elphicke had violated the code over their ‘egregious attempt’ to influence Elphicke’s legal proceedings.

Accordingly, the House of Commons was suspended for a single day by Mrs Elphicke (Sir Roger Gale) and Theresa Villiers (Theresa Villiers).

Together with Bob Stewarts and Adam Holloway they had written to the top members of judiciary raising concern that a junior judge would consider publishing Mr Elphicke’s character references.

The party whip was suspended by him in 2017, when the allegations of sexual abuse first surfaced. It was controversially reinstated in 2018 for a critical confidence vote in Mrs May’s then-prime minister.

In the summer following, Elphicke was charged by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Elphicke claimed that he applied for Universal Credit last month and stated: “I have no job, no career, I’m long-term unemployed.

I am currently working together with the job centre, my probation officer, and other professionals to help me find a new profession.
