This freak accident happens in the early days of 2022, after one year of violence in New York City. However, the situation is not changing, even though Eric Adams, newly inaugurated Mayor, promises to have a harder stance on crime that his predecessor Bill de Blasio.

On Tuesday, a shocking video captured the moment an 85-year-old woman was slammed into a wall inside a Bronx apartment building after a cold-hearted thief dragged her out of an elevator by her cane and rifled through her purse.

As crime spirals in New York City, surveillance video was shared by the NYPD on Monday. The robbery took place at the E 149th St. building.

To hide his identity, the thief was dressed in a surgical mask, hoodie, and gloves and entered the lift on the first floor. He then rode up with an elderly lady to the sixth.

He then got out when the doors opened, appeared to look down the floor’s hall to make sure no residents were out of their apartments and then went back inside the elevator to steal the elderly woman’s purse.

According to police, the elderly woman with no identification was admitted to Lincoln Hospital complaining of neck pain.

Later that day the thief entered the elevator with another stack of cash, thought to have been from his purse. It is not clear how much he took.

This attack occurred on the same day that four other violent incidents in the subway’s crime-ridden system were reported. One was where a man was shoved onto the tracks, but managed to climb up to safety.

A woman in her 40s was the first victim of 2022’s first mass homicide.

Unidentified woman was discovered lying on the Astoria sidewalk, Queens just before 9:00pm Saturday.

After being stabbed several times in Astoria near Bel Aire Diner, she died later at Astoria General Hospital.

In the murder, no witnesses nor suspects were identified.

Eric Adams was appointed NYC mayor on Saturday.

Adams, 61, a former New York City police captain, began his first day on the job by riding the subway from his Brooklyn brownstone to City Hall.

On New Year’s Day 2022, a woman was fatally stabbed near Queens’s Diner. This is the first murder committed in 2022.

Crime scene tape was seen spread across are where the woman's body was found

The area where the body of the victim was discovered was covered in crime scene tape.

While waiting for his train to New York, he chatted with New Yorkers and a crowd of reporters. He also called 911 to report an argument after observing two men fight near the subway station.

He promised that he would aggressively pursue violent crime later in the day while also holding a press conference on a wounded police officer hours before.

Adams and Keechant, his new police chief, hosted the conference outside a hospital. The event was held after Adams was wounded in an incident in which a officer was sleeping in his precinct car, while switching between shifts. It is anticipated that the officer will fully recover.

Adams stated that New York was ‘not going be a place of violence.

He stated, “I’m clear in my mission to aggressively pursue those carrying violence weapons in our community,”

Adams had recited the Oath of Office hours before, while confetti was still drifting across Times Square.

Sylvia O Hinds–Radix Associate Justice of the state Supreme Court’s appellate Division wore Adams in while he held one hand on his family Bible, and the other holding a photograph his mother Dorothy (who died in 2020).

Adams announced Saturday that after cancelling his initial plans to sworn in at a Brooklyn theatre, he decided to host the ceremony on the spot of the New Years Eve ball drop. This was to demonstrate that New York is open and active and that it can and should again be at the centre of the universe.

Adams explained that New Yorkers were subject to a two-year crisis due to the pandemic.

‘There’s one thing that everyone knows about New Yorkers: We don´t like anyone telling us what to do,’ he added.

Everybody who wants to eat indoors or see a performance, exercise at the gym, or go to a conference is required to get vaccinated. New York City is also requiring private sector workers to be vaccinated – the broadest mandate given by any state or large city, and one Adams promised he will keep.

Even without an orderly shutdown, many Covid-19-related infections are causing de facto closings in the city.

Numerous subway lines were shut down due to the fact that there was too little staff available for regular train operations after positive transit worker test results. Live entertainment has been cancelled, while bars and restaurants have closed as employees test positive.

Adams and his advisers were discussing whether or not to increase vaccine mandates. Adams also stated they are planning to distribute quick tests and face masks as well as a color-coded system that alerts New Yorkers of the current threat level.

Adams, while promising to act in the Mayor’s Office, is sometimes a unconventional politician that is expected put his stamp on it.

Adams is the ex-president of Brooklyn Borough. He has taken a more moderate and business-friendly stance than his predecessor, but he describes himself as pragmatic and progressive mayor who will “get things done”.

After David Dinkins (1990-1993), he is now the second-black mayor in the city. He also serves as the 110th Mayor of New York City.

His first cabinet meeting was held Saturday morning. Later that afternoon, he visited Queens’ police precinct to express his self-resilience and see the scene where he had been beaten as a teenager by officers.

He said, “Today is a significant moment for me, as I finally leave this demon right here, on these streets. I’m no longer experiencing the trauma that I suffered in the precinct but back as mayor responsible for the entire police department,”
