Covid hospital admissions in London — Britain’s Omicron ground zero — are within touching distance of the Government’s threshold of 400 for introducing lockdown restrictions across the country.

The latest NHS data indicates that there were 386 new HIV-positive admissions in London on December 22nd, marking an increase of 92% over the previous week.

Although they have doubled in the past 10 days, the number of Covid hospitalisations is still very low compared to the peak of 850 last January. 

The Times reports that Johnson could have to request additional restrictions for implementation in time for New Years Eve.

Ministers will be monitoring admissions in London, before they decide to put the brakes on further national curbs. London’s Omicron outbreak is only a few days away.

A national two-week ‘circuit breaker’ lockdown has been mooted after Christmas if London’s daily admissions breach 400 this week — which would signal ‘unsustainable’ pressure on the NHS. 

London, which was home to the Omicron virus in Britain, became the focal point of the outbreak just two weeks prior. This is why experts see the trending city as a warning sign for what’s coming for England. 

The delay in recording NHS data means that it won’t be known until after Christmas whether admissions exceeded 400 during the previous two days.

Experts and MPs have demanded that the government distinguish between those who are hospitalized ‘with’ or “for” Covid, before making any social restrictions. 

MailOnline analysis of London Covid admissions shows that one-third (127) of 386 patients tested positive for the disease after they arrived at hospital. 

Comparatively, around 12% of what were called “incidental admissions”, occurred in the Delta variant’s last two weeks at the November end.
