A new survey has revealed that nearly one fifth of Brits don’t plan normal New Year and Christmas celebrations due to persistent fears about the coronavirus crisis.
An exclusive survey conducted by Redfield & Wilton Strategies for MailOnline found the majority of people – 81 per cent – do intend to go ahead with normal celebrations but 19 per cent said they do not.
The nation remains divided over whether or not the government could introduce new coronavirus rules that would disrupt festivities.
48% of respondents believe there won’t be coronavirus restrictions that will prevent normal Christmas celebrations.
However, 31% of respondents expect such restrictions to be in place. Only 20% said that they didn’t know.
A new survey has revealed that nearly one fifth of Brits don’t plan normal New Year and Christmas celebrations due to persistent fears about the coronavirus crisis.
After Boris Johnson earlier this week said that he cannot rule out the possibility of a lockdown for Christmas, these poll results are now available.
According to the Prime Minister, while data does not indicate that additional measures are required at this time, he cannot guarantee them for future weeks or months.
Mr Johnson told a Downing Street press conference: ‘Clearly we cannot rule anything out and the most important thing people can do to prevent further NPIs from being taken is to – non-pharmaceutical interventions that is, further restrictions – get the boosters.’
The PM warned there were ‘storm clouds’ gathering over parts of Europe with a ‘new wave’ of the virus sweeping across the continent.
He said, “We do not yet know how large this wave will reach our shores. But history has shown that we can’t afford to be complacent.”
“Countries with low vaccination rates tend to experience larger spikes in infections and have had to take harsher actions, while countries with high vaccination rates fared well.
The nation remains divided over whether or not the government could introduce new coronavirus rules that would disrupt festivities.
“It shows that we need to get everyone vaccinated quickly if there is a serious outbreak in the UK.
On Monday, The Government stated that all adults older than 40 years old will be eligible for booster vaccinations over the next few weeks.
Johnson stated that it would be a tragic outcome if people who were vaccinated twice ended up falling ill or losing their lives as a result of their immunity waining.
