Today, fears were expressed that Partygate is fuelling Nicola Sturgeon’s drive to separate the UK.

According to polls, more than half of Scots think that the story surrounding Boris Johnson is hurting the Union’s case.

A majority of respondents believe the PM should be fired over allegations that Downing Street was locked down violated.

Although support has risen to 50% for independence, the country is divided on the issue of whether it should be independent.

While Ms. Sturgeon pledged that she will do “everything within my power” to have a referendum next, Mr Johnson claims he will not.

Asked how they would vote if a referendum on Scottish independence was held tomorrow, 50 per cent said they would vote yes – two points higher than in October

Scots Tory leader Douglas Ross has been among the people who demanded that the PM resign after admitting to attending a “BYOB” bash during lockdown’s height in May 2020. He insists that he did not think it was work, but he said so.  

54% of respondents said that the scandal had affected the case for union membership to some degree.

Just over a third thought there was no real impact, while 11 per cent did not know.

Asked how they would vote if a referendum on Scottish independence was held tomorrow, 50 per cent said they would vote yes – two points higher than in October.

Including don’t knows, support for both Yes and No was at 46 per cent with 8 per cent undecided. 

Chris Hopkins, Savanta ComRes’ political research director, stated: “A fifty-fifty split regarding the independence voting intent does represent a little shift towards Yes since October’s last poll. However, ultimately, due to the crisis the UK Government is experiencing currently, one might expect support for independent countries to be greater.”
