It was not clear if Francis had received a booster shot. This has already been given to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.

These cases are among the first confirmed Covid cases in Vatican hierarchy history since the outbreak of the pandemic.

Despite some resistance from the Catholic Church, Pope Francis has been vocal about his support of Covid vaccines.

He said last week that inoculation against the virus was a ‘moral obligation’ and denounced how people had been swayed by ‘baseless information’ to refuse jabs.

Francis, 85, has previously described vaccination as “an act of Love” and said refusing to be jabbed was suicide. However, last week he stated that everyone had an obligation to look after themselves.

“This means that we should respect the health and well-being of others. He stated that health care was a moral responsibility.

Francis stated that vaccines were not magical cures, but they are the best way to prevent the spread of disease.

Some Catholics including conservative U.S. cardinals have claimed that vaccines based upon research using cells from aborted foetuses are immoral and refused to receive the jabs.

But, according to the Vatican’s doctrine office it’s morally permissible for Catholics not to be given COVID-19 vaccines. It’s based upon research using cells taken from aborted babies.

Francis and Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI were double vaccinated using Pfizer BioNTech shots.
