Before you get started on a DIY project, you’ll need a tool kit with all the right equipment to complete your projects safely and efficiently. While you don’t need to own every single tool under the sun, having the right tools can be the difference between a successfully completed project and an unmitigated disaster

One tool that doesn’t get enough attention is the rubber mallet. While mallets might look like hammers, they fulfil a different purpose, and no good tool kit is complete without one. You can use rubber mallets in a variety of different ways, as they’re incredibly versatile tools. What is a Rubber Mallet?

A rubber mallet is a type of mallet with a head that’s usually made from rubber. They’re used in a similar way to a hammer, in that you use it to strike another object and apply force. However, the material of the head changes the outcome of that force. Unlike a hammer, which uses a hard head, the mallet’s head is much softer, which means you can use it to hit objects that are slightly more delicate.

One thing to note about rubber mallets is that they come in many different sizes. You should base your purchase on the needs of the job, and it’s worth considering that bigger mallets are less likely to bounce back. When using one, you should take the same precautions as when using a hammer, as safety is always important.

What Can I Use a Rubber Mallet For?

Rubber mallets can be used to apply force to objects that would be too delicate to use a hammer on. Whereas hammers are good for hitting nails into wood, mallets are far more versatile. For example, you can use a mallet to knock tiles into place and ensure a snug fit when repairing a roof.

In any project that involves a material that could break, such as ceramic, brick, drywall, or anything else, mallets are favoured over hammers, as hitting them with a mallet is less likely to cause damage. In addition, most types of wood and a lot of metal can be dented or scratched by metal hammers, so be sure to use a rubber mallet instead when possible.

If you’re a fan of flatpack furniture such as the kind you’d purchase at Ikea, rubber mallets are extremely useful. You can use your mallet to knock parts into place, and you don’t need to worry about breaking the furniture or causing any damage. If you have a carpentry project, the mallet is also ideal for knocking two pieces of wood together.

Although rubber is soft, it can still cause damage if not used properly. You can still exert a lot of force with a mallet, especially if its head has a metal core for additional weight. Be careful when applying force to delicate materials, and use a smaller tool if necessary.

Safety When Using the Mallet

Even if rubber mallets aren’t as dangerous as a hammer, it’s still important to follow the correct safety procedures. Rubber mallets are capable of bouncing back after impact and can also be quite heavy. Wear safety glasses when using them, and avoid using your mallet if the head has been damaged. Over time and exposure to elements, the rubber may degrade, so ensure you replace it if needed.
