Broken End Caps
Every pool filter has two plastic end caps that hold the paper material in place. The end caps should be strong enough to last for the entire lifetime of the pool, but things happen.
Constant exposure to chemicals can wear on the plastic material and crack it. If you notice any damage, you’ll need to replace the caps ASAP.
Your filter will still be able to function as normal, but if the plastic manages to break off and recirculate through the pool, it might be sharp enough to damage your pump. Not to mention, children tend to put everything in their mouths.
Frayed Filter
If your water is looking a little dirty, it’s time to take out your filter and look at it. When it’s done serving its purpose, the material will fray and begin to fall apart.

Not only is it not filtering your pool water, but it’s also forcing the pump to work harder. The pump may break on you if you don’t buy a new pool filter.
