Crispin Blunt, Tory MP and founder of the Westminster pressure group on cannabis, despite mounting lobbying concerns

  • One Tory MP launched a Westminster pressure group to promote medicinal cannabis
  • That is despite the sleaze row engulfing the party over parliamentary lobbying
  • The first meeting of all-party group was held by MP Crispin Blunt on Wednesday

A senior Tory MP has launched a Westminster pressure group for medicinal cannabis despite growing concerns over parliamentary lobbying.

Crispin Blunt held the first meeting of the all-party parliamentary group (APPG) on Wednesday – the same day that MPs voted on plans to tackle Parliament sleaze.

The legal name for CBD is cannabidiol. It’s a compound found in cannabis and used legally to treat pain.

Mr Blunt, a former prisons minister, argues that a new body is needed because the CBD industry is being ‘strangled’ due to a legal grey area over how much THC – the psychoactive component of cannabis – can be included in products.

Cannabidiol (or CBD) is a legal component of cannabis that can be legally used for pain relief.

The APPG CBD was not registered by the parliamentary authorities.

The public is not able to find out its true purpose, funding source or who the people who run it.

There are increasing concerns about APPGs being involved in more sleaze scandals.

A Commons Committee on Standards has launched an investigation into APPGs.

Blunt didn’t respond to our request for comment.
