Two juveniles sustained injuries in a shooting in a park in Uvalde (Texas) on Thursday. This was the scene of one of Texas’s most deadly mass shootings.
Uvalde Police, under scrutiny over how they handled the Robb Elementary School shooting that left 21 people dead on May 24, came under severe scrutiny. The shooting occurred at Uvalde Memorial Park around 5:30pm Thursday.
Initial reports by police stated that the incident had resulted in injuries to ‘two juveniles. KENS 5 reports that the victims are being treated in San Antonio hospitals.
Four people have been taken into custody for the shooting. However, it’s not clear if these are suspects. KSAT reports that all four of them were present at the hospital to seek medical help and were then taken into question.
Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin said that the shooting involved rival gangs, which follows the Texas Department of Safety tweeting out this evening that the shooting is ‘gang-related’.
Just over a mile away is Robb Elementary school, which was the tragic site of the shooting.

Uvalde Elementary was shot to death on May 24, making it the deadliest school shooting American history. Uvalde Memorial Park existed before that shooting.
Later that night, Texas Governor Greg Abbott made a statement about the shooting and said he would provide any state assistance necessary to locate the shooters.
He said, “I was shocked to discover that gang violence had endangered the Uvalde Community and innocent Texans tonight.” Mayor McLaughlin called me immediately, and I also called County Judge Mitchell. They asked for the support of the entire state as they hunt down the criminal gang members.
Abbott said that he had spoken with the Mayor and County Judge about the urgent need for additional law enforcement support. He directed the Department of Public Safety, to patrol the hotspots of gang violence, to send six DPS trooper teams to operate around the clock and to coordinate an anti-gang operation with the City.
He stated that agents from the state will collaborate with county and local police to “bring down all the force of justice against these evil criminals.”
Abbott will be running to re-elect himself in 2022. Beto O’Rourke, his opponent – an anti-gun activist and staunch supporter of the Second Amendment – is running for re-election in 2022. tweeted Friday: ‘We don’t have to accept this as our reality. We can reduce gun violence by following the advice of Uvalde’s 21 families, but we must have a governor to do so.
Uvalde Together Resiliency Center spokeswoman said that it understood that “this latest incident” could trigger the families who survived the Robb Elementary school shooting. She also added that counselors were available for those in need.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott made a statement later in the evening about the shooting, labeling it an outrage.

National shock at Uvalde’s school shooting prompted calls for reform of gun laws. The victims included 19 schoolchildren and two teachers.
Robb Elementary has been shut down since the fatal shooting. Students have been moved elsewhere.
The fact that Salvador Ramos was a deranged mass-shooter, as documented by hundreds of police officers in and around the school has made it clear that they waited for over an hour before entering the schools.

Officials at school have been working all summer to improve safety procedures and even fire the embattled chief of police after an investigation revealed that officers stood still for nearly an hour while Salvador Ramos (18 years old) was arrested. He took refuge in his classroom and started a fire.
Robb Elementary School is being closed down as part of a plan to increase safety. This school was responsible for the massacre that claimed the lives of nearly 100 students.
The district has also employed 33 Texas Department of Public Safety officers to monitor the schools — none of whom would be among the dozens who failed to promptly respond to the shooting.
Officials have hired 10 extra police officers for school security, put 500 additional cameras in place, fired Pete Arredondo (school police chief), and are currently searching for a replacement.
In addition, the District is increasing its emotional support services to students. Comfort dogs are available on all campuses for the first few weeks, as well as school counselors and staff training in trauma-informed healthcare.
