Waitrose is recalling some of its chicken sandwich range due to a potential salmonella risk amid a growing High Street poultry crisis.
The move came as Pret A Manger removed all the chicken items on its menu, Aldi recalled its chicken and bacon Caesar wraps and Sainsburys took action on its cooked chicken offering.
Waitrose made the announcement as a precautionary measure and advised customers to refrain from eating the wraps and sandwiches.
‘We’re recalling 10 of our Waitrose chicken sandwich and wrap lines — with Use By dates up to and including 14 May — due to a potential Salmonella risk,’ a spokesperson told MailOnline.
These items should be returned to us within 14 days for full reimbursement. We regret this inconvenience.
It was not clear from the spokesperson which specific sandwiches and wraps would be recalled.
This issue could be caused by an issue with a supplier.
Waitrose told MailOnline it is recalling 10 of its own chicken sandwich and wrap lines — with Use By dates up to and including 14 May, but it did not specify which exact ones. The chicken and bacon Caesar and the southern fried chicken wraps are shown.
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said in a Tweet: ‘We are recalling the majority of Sainsbury’s and Taste the Difference chicken sandwiches, chicken wraps, chicken sandwich platters and some of our cooked chicken.’
This was described by the supermarket chain as a precautionary step. The company added that ‘our supplier has alerted’ us to salmonella contamination in some chicken batches.
Pret also decided to take a ‘precautionary action’ and remove chicken pieces ‘due to potential food safety risks at a source’.
The chain previously advertised a Sriracha Chicken Salad Wrap for its new menu but the item does not currently appear on its website.
Other staples, such as the Chicken Caesar baguette, are no longer available. A notice says “Oops! This product is not currently in our shops.”
MailOnline was informed by a spokesperson for Pret A Manger that the company had temporarily removed most chicken products from its menu because of a possible food safety concern at one of their suppliers.

Aldi’s recall of Waitrose’s chicken Caesar wraps was due to Salmonella fears. Sainsbury’s had customers complaining that they were ‘blocked’ by Aldi from purchasing chicken.
Food Standards Agency is advising anyone who has Aldi items stored in their fridge to not eat them. For a complete refund, customers are asked to return any Aldi items to the closest store.
Both the triple wrap, bacon Caesar wrap, and Eat + Go chicken Caesar wrap have been affected. Items contaminated must be used by May 11, and May 12, respectively.
