The word-guessing game that is taking over the world has been likened to Lingo, an 80’s game.

Josh Wardle, who lives in Brooklyn and graduated from Royal Holloway, University of London in 2006, created the game Wordle to play with partner Palak Shah.

The game was first enjoyed by Ms Shah. Mr Wardle shared the video with his family through WhatsApp. It became so popular, he decided to share it with the rest of the world.

Wordle was populated by 90 users on November 1. More than 300,000 participants took part in last Sunday’s Daily Challenge. Wordle was quickly spreading on social media.

It has been likened to the game show Lingo which was aired in both the UK and US in the 1980s. ITV has shown a revival of a UK show since 2020.

The contestants in Lingo took turns guessing five letter words during the game show.

Wordle is a similar game where players can guess five letter words once daily.

Wordle allows you to see if your letters match the location and tells you which ones.

The secret word will be revealed to the players in six different attempts.

Josh Wardle designed the game before releasing it to the general public. The game is played daily by hundreds upon thousands of people.

ITV’s relaunched Lingo sees three pairs of contestants try to work out words appearing in grids and puzzlewords.

Lingo computers give them the first letters of words with different lengths. They can also cash in the winning letter if they correctly guess the whole word.

Wordle and Lingo were quickly compared by fans.

One commented: “Is there a connection between Wordle, the TV quiz show Lingo?” Is it just an accident that the colours they use are identical?

Another replied: “So the Wordle thing that everyone is doing, it’s just Lingo. Lingo was stolen and converted to an app.

A third person added, “Hold up.” This Wordle thing that I’ve been seeing lately is really just Lingo.

Wordle’s creator, Mr Wardle (a Reddit former software engineer), created a prototype similar to the one that was used in 2013. However, friends rejected it.

Wordle: How does it work?

  • Players visit the Wordle website everyday to try and guess that day’s five letter word.
  • The word is given to you in six rounds.
  • Each guess results in correct letters turning green if they are in the correct place, and yellow if they are in the wrong.
  • Grey letters should be ignored, as they do not belong in the word.
  • You can share your efforts on social media using coloured grids.
  • Only one Wordle is available per day

However, he returned to the game during the pandemic after his partner and he ‘got really into the’ daily crossword and spelling contests at the New York Times.

This isn’t the first time Mr Wardle created something online that caused an uproar.

Reddit’s The Button was created by him in 2015. It is a strange game that sees a button appear on a site with a 60 second countdown.

The clock resets every time the button is pressed, although each individual could only do it once. It was not a prize, but millions were able to click the button because they could.

Place is also his invention. This collaborative social experiment caused ripples in April 2017.

Users could fight about what was drawn in Place, an online shared space.

This led to huge and sprawling online communities fighting for space.

Wardle, who is now based in New York says that he loves ‘building unique products which focus on human interaction.

Ms Shah claims that she wakes up each morning to play Wordle. Although it’s now open to the public, Ms Shah said that she still appreciates Mr Wardle creating it.

She said, “It’s so sweet.” “This is how Josh shows his love.

Mr Wardle graduated Royal Holloway, University of London in 2006 after studying Media Arts. After graduating from Royal Holloway, University of London in 2006, Wardle studied Digital Arts at University of Oregon.

After his education, he worked as an artist at Reddit for two years before becoming a senior product manager. Later, he became an advisor for the company.

Before joining Reddit, Mr Wardle worked nearly two years for Pinterest as a software engineer before returning to Reddit again in January 2020.

Mister Wardle told The New York Times that Worlde’s success was a matter of appreciation by people. This is not an attempt to steal your eyes or data.

The game is also very easy to play and takes only three minutes per day, according to him.

Wardle explained that it was something that encouraged him to devote three minutes per day. It’s that simple. This doesn’t need any additional time from you.

His partner, who was also the first to try the game out, played an important role in getting the game ready for the rest of the world.

Wordle’s first list of English five-letter words, approximately 12,000, contained some obscure words they thought were impossible to identify.

Mr Wardle eventually narrowed the list of Wordle words to about 2,500, which should last for a few years.

Fans have complained that certain words are not correct. REBUS and TAPIR were not familiar enough.
