A nutritionist has shared how to lose 10 kilos before Christmas, depending on your age.

Cheree Sheldon, Healthy Mummy nutritionist, stated that it is harder to lose weight as you age, but not impossible. Therefore, it is important to adapt your exercise routine to your needs to see results.

Ms. Sheldon stressed the importance of setting’smart goals’ for yourself that are specific and achievable. She recommends that you avoid vague goals.

It’s more like a stage in life than a set age. She said that post-puberty is a time when we need to eat and train differently than postpartum and after menopause.

IN YOUR TWENTIES

Ms. Sheldon stated that people in their twenties often place more importance on their appearance than their health.

She suggested that this motivation could be used to encourage long-lasting healthier habits, such as a reduction in alcohol consumption or a greater home cooking habit.

Instead of drinking soft drinks, opt for low-calorie beverages.

Ms. Sheldon also suggested drinking water between drinks to “be kinder to you liver” and stomach, and to help you lose unwanted weight.

You can also achieve your dream body by sticking to a low-carb, high-protein diet plan for eight weeks.

IN YOUR THIRTIES

Whether you’re juggling parenthood or work commitments, focusing on your health by meal prepping in bulk at home is one tip suggested by Ms Sheldon.

Many women may also be experiencing a postpartum period during this decade, and naturally will notice a lot of bodily changes.

She explained that the pelvis has widened which means that your hips will look and feel different.

“This is not a reason to stop you from losing the excess fat that naturally accumulates during pregnancy. Instead, embrace your body and put your efforts into making it stronger and more healthy. You have just created another human!

IN YOUR FORTIES

During your forties your body often experiences hormonal changes when entering peri-menopause.

To decrease your risk of developing osteoporosis as you go through change, it’s important that you include resistance exercises and muscle strength training in your workout routine.

Ms Sheldon stated that you are at risk of developing insulin resistance and thyroid problems. Therefore, a diet that is low-moderate GI foods would be ideal.

“Some women find that a lower-carb diet is more suitable for them at this stage of their lives, while others find that a Keto diet works well for them.

Strong bones and muscles will be of great benefit to you for the next 40 years of life if they are strong now.

IN YOUR FIFTIES

It’s important to be focused on your strengths and abilities once you reach your fifties, when you have entered menopause.

To stay in shape, you may need to eat lighter meals with fewer calories. Ms Sheldon advised that you be mindful of wine and cheese time and to limit your intake when socializing.

Exercise to your full potential, but don’t be hard on yourself. You can still enjoy the activities that bring you joy at this stage, but you might need magnesium to help with muscle stiffness.
